S&P Global Energy’s announced architecture lets compatible AI agents ask natural-language questions of structured energy and commodity data through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Subject-matter experts curate the data context for domain-specific Genie Agents; Databricks exposes those agents through managed MCP servers; and a FastMCP proxy can combine domains for broader questions. The design is described in a Databricks customer story, not an independent performance or security evaluation.
How the architecture connects data to AI agents
The September 25, 2026 Databricks account describes a three-layer pattern for making S&P Global Energy’s structured data available to customer and internal AI agents. The reported subject areas include chemicals, crude oil, refined products, gas and power, and liquefied natural gas. Data may be stored in Databricks or accessed from other systems using Lakehouse Federation connectors. Databricks’ customer story describes the implementation.
1. Subject-matter experts curate domain agents
For a group of related datasets, subject-matter experts select relevant tables and configure a Genie Agent with business context and examples. The account says they can do this without writing agent code. This layer supplies domain meaning—how the data should be understood and what questions it can answer—rather than asking every customer-facing agent to interpret raw tables unaided.
2. Databricks exposes each agent through MCP
Each Genie Agent is made available as a Databricks-managed MCP server. MCP provides a way for a compatible client agent or assistant to discover and call tools exposed by a server. In the described query flow, a client sends a question and then polls for the response, using tools named genie_query_space and genie_poll_response.

3. A FastMCP proxy composes domains
A FastMCP proxy combines domain-specific servers into composite endpoints. A calling agent can therefore direct a question to one domain or, when the question crosses subject areas, to multiple domains through the composed layer. The proxy and shared connection infrastructure give engineering teams a common integration surface instead of requiring a separate conversational interface for each data domain.
What users and teams can do with it
The intended result is conversational access to governed energy and commodity data from S&P Global Energy’s own internal and customer-facing agents and assistants that support MCP. A compatible agent can ask about a market-data domain without requiring a bespoke chat interface for every dataset group. The account establishes an announced capability; it does not disclose the number of customers using it or the scale of any rollout.

The work is divided between domain expertise and platform engineering: SMEs maintain the context attached to datasets, while engineers maintain the shared infrastructure and cross-domain proxy. That separation can make the approach reusable across domains, but the available account does not provide a controlled comparison with another architecture.
What Unity Catalog governs—and what is not independently verified
S&P Global Energy identifies Unity Catalog as the governance layer. Its account says requests use existing permissions and that the access layer can serve both native Databricks data and federated sources. Databricks’ documentation says managed MCP servers are governed by Unity Catalog, with permissions limiting the data and tools that agents and users can access: Databricks managed MCP documentation.

These descriptions explain the intended permission model; they are not an independent security audit of this deployment. They also do not establish specific audit results, configuration details, or security guarantees beyond the documented governance claims.
What the “takes days” claim means
Priyanka John, vice president at S&P Global Energy, told Databricks: “What used to take a full development cycle now takes days, and every answer stays inside our governance boundary.” This is a statement in Databricks’ September 25, 2026 customer story. The account does not provide a measured baseline, benchmark, error rate, or independently verified deployment-time comparison, so “days” should be read as the company’s reported experience rather than a general performance result.

Databricks MCP status depends on the product surface
Databricks documentation accessed October 3, 2026 marked managed MCP servers as Public Preview. A separate Databricks document says Genie One MCP became generally available as a Databricks-provided MCP Service on September 25, 2026; it also says the earlier Beta endpoint is deprecated and scheduled to sunset on October 31, 2026. These are distinct MCP surfaces, and the documentation does not establish that S&P Global Energy’s described deployment has moved to Genie One.
For implementation decisions, check the current status of the exact endpoint and feature you plan to use. The managed MCP documentation and Genie One MCP documentation describe different product surfaces.

What the announcement does not establish
- No published benchmark scores, latency measurements, cost figures, or accuracy results for the S&P Global Energy implementation.
- No quantified customer adoption, deployment-time baseline, or time-to-market comparison.
- No controlled head-to-head comparison with other ways to connect enterprise data and AI agents.
TechInformed’s October 1, 2026 coverage likewise notes that benchmark, deployment-time, and customer-adoption figures were not disclosed: TechInformed’s report. The architecture is most useful to understand as a vendor-described design pattern, with its outcomes and governance claims attributed to the companies involved.
