WordPress Core updated its Trac lists for component maintainers and bug gardeners, and added three contributor teams with triage-level access to the wordpress-develop GitHub repository. The October 2, 2026 announcement says the changes were intended to clarify who looks after project areas and make contributor work easier. It also explains why names may have been removed, how to flag a mistake, and what invited GitHub members need to do.
Why were maintainer and bug gardener lists changed?
Aaron Jorbin’s October 2 announcement says the Core Component Maintainers and Core Bug Gardeners lists were updated. It gives three possible reasons someone may have been removed:
- They had moved on from contributing.
- They had not contributed regularly to a component.
- They had not connected their GitHub and WordPress.org accounts.
The post does not identify which reason applied to any particular person. If you believe you were removed by mistake, message @desrosj or @jorbin in Slack, or comment on the announcement: Core Trac and GitHub Team Spring Cleaning (Southern Hemisphere edition).
The announcement also welcomes volunteers for either role. Interested contributors should make sure their GitHub and WordPress.org accounts are connected.

Which GitHub teams received triage access?
Three teams were added to the WordPress/wordpress-develop GitHub repository with triage-level access. The announcement describes their membership and purpose as follows:

The previous WordPress Core PR Triage team’s members were invited to join the Bug Gardeners group. Jorbin’s post says the old team’s purpose and permissions aligned with that responsibility. The announcement describes triage access as allowing members to request code reviews, assign labels, and help triage pull requests; it does not describe broader administrative permissions.

How do component maintenance, ticket gardening and PR triage differ?
Component maintenance
Component maintainers look after a defined area of WordPress Core. The announcement used the Make Core Components page as the basis for the corresponding GitHub team.
Trac ticket gardening
Bug gardeners help keep the project’s Trac tickets attended to. Trac’s documentation describes tickets as the central project-management element, covering tasks, feature requests, bug reports and software support: TracTickets.

GitHub pull-request triage
Pull-request triage concerns proposed code changes in GitHub. The new access lets members request reviews, assign labels and help organize that work. GitHub’s general documentation explains how issues can track work and how Projects can organize issues and pull requests with customizable views and fields: About Projects and Planning and tracking work for your team or project. Those are general platform capabilities, not additional WordPress Core policies.
How long do invitees have to accept?
People who received a GitHub team invitation had seven days to accept it. The announcement says some contributors may have been missed and invites them to comment on the post.

What contributor impact did the comments report?
In a comment on the October 2 post, Manuel Camargo described his own work on ticket queues. He said gardening the Mail component reduced its tickets from “over a hundred to barely a dozen.” He also reported doing more than 20 bug scrubs on Posts, where the count fell from “almost 600 tickets to barely 250,” with “0 pending response tickets.” These are Camargo’s personal reported figures in that comment, not independently validated or project-wide statistics.
