Florence Pugh discussed the Cornell University sexual-assault case on The View and said Instagram had censored her post about it. Reports described a sensitive-content warning on the original post and a later review that removed the label; they do not establish that Instagram intentionally limited its reach. The case itself remains unresolved: a former Cornell student has sued seven former students and the university, and New York’s attorney general is now overseeing a reopened criminal investigation.
What Florence Pugh said
Pugh spoke about the case during an appearance on The View while promoting Netflix’s East of Eden. She said the allegations made her feel scared, anxious and angry, and connected the case to the wider impact of sexual violence. As Variety reported, she said, “Rape is something that lives. The fear of it lives in our bodies.”
She also criticized what she viewed as censorship of women discussing sexual violence. TheWrap reported her saying: “Instagram censored me when I said it, which is also just another shock that women are censored.” The remark is Pugh’s characterization of Instagram’s handling of her post.
Why did Instagram block Florence Pugh’s post about Cornell?
“Blocked” needs qualification. Coverage described a sensitive-content warning on Pugh’s original post. Pugh then posted again to say Instagram had blocked her message from reaching the right people. Variety reported that, at the time of its article, the original post was still visible with a warning and the follow-up also had a warning.

A later report by IBTimes UK said Meta removed the sensitive-content label after a review. That account did not establish that the post had been removed, nor did Meta reportedly disclose how widely it had been shown while labeled or confirm a deliberate reduction in distribution. The available reporting therefore distinguishes the warning and its later removal from Pugh’s separate claim about the post’s reach.
What is the Cornell case?
A former Cornell student, identified as Jane Doe in court documents, sued Cornell University and seven former students. Her lawsuit alleges that members of Chi Phi sexually assaulted her at the fraternity’s Cornell residence in October 2024 after she was given drugs and alcohol and became incapacitated. These are civil allegations, not findings of guilt.

The defendants’ accounts differ. The Associated Press reported that some disputed her account or said the sexual activity and drug use were consensual; lawyers for two men denied that their clients participated. The allegations have not been adjudicated, and no criminal charges are established by the reporting cited here.
University proceedings are separate from the criminal investigation
The AP reported that Cornell’s inquiry involved interviews, hearings and a report. Court-filed documents reviewed by the AP described 50 interviews with 32 witnesses, 12 days of hearings and a 99-page report. Those figures describe the university disciplinary process, not a judicial finding or the criminal investigation. Cornell withheld specific sanction details while saying some students were expelled or suspended.

Why the case’s handling is disputed
Accounts of what campus police and prosecutors reviewed are contested. The AP reported that the woman told campus police she was certain she had been raped. District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said the police summary he initially reviewed did not contain allegations that she had been forced to have sex or drugged against her will. The criminal investigation initially closed without charges after he reviewed that summary; it later reopened after the civil lawsuit brought more information to public attention.

On October 1, 2026, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor to take over oversight of the reopened criminal investigation. In its October 3, 2026 explainer, the AP reported that James described it as a monthslong process with no predetermined outcome. Hochul said the young woman deserved to know that “every fact will be examined and justice pursued,” according to the AP.
