Dal Lake is under pressure from sewage, solid waste, agricultural runoff, urban growth and sediment buildup. Climate-related shifts in snowfall, snowmelt and rainfall add another strain by making inflows less predictable. The evidence points to interacting pressures—not climate change alone—as the story behind the lake’s environmental challenges.
What is affecting Dal Lake?
Dal Lake’s environmental condition reflects several pressures that reach the water through different routes. A 2024 review of Kashmir Valley lakes identifies sewage, solid waste, urbanization, agricultural cultivation, fertilizers and manures as contributors to nutrient and organic pollution. Jammu and Kashmir’s 2017 climate action plan also identifies solid and organic waste, agricultural chemicals and weak water flow as pressures on the region’s lakes.
Urban development and land use matter because they can increase pollution reaching the lake and alter its surroundings. Sewage is a particular concern where households are not connected to treatment systems. Associated Press reported in June 2026 that sewage from unconnected homes remains a major contributor to pollution in Dal Lake.
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India’s Report No. 4 of 2025, tabled on 30 March 2026, includes a chapter on Dal Lake. Its listed audit topics include sewage treatment plants, sewer-network gaps, household sewage disposal, waste handling, catchment works, water budgets, biodiversity, monitoring and impact assessment. The audit period ended in March 2022, with later instances included where necessary. The official report page establishes the subjects examined; it does not, by itself, establish detailed findings for each topic. CAG report page

How nutrients, weeds and sediment affect the lake
Nutrient pollution and eutrophication
When sewage and agricultural runoff add nutrients and organic matter to water, they can encourage excessive plant and algal growth. This process, known as eutrophication, is one of the conditions described in the 2024 review, which characterizes Dal Lake as highly eutrophicated. The review also reports that total organic carbon in lake-bottom sediments ranged from 2.72% to 25.12% in the studies it synthesizes; these are not new measurements made by the review authors.
Vegetation is part of the lake’s ecology, so the presence of plants alone does not mean that every weed is invasive or harmful. But dense growth can become a management challenge, particularly in a nutrient-enriched lake. AP reported weed-removal work in 2026. Ghulam Rasool, a local-government weed cleaner, told AP: “We are afraid to touch the water with bare hands. Whenever we need to clean something by hand, we wear gloves, because without them our hands quickly develop allergies.” This is a worker’s account of his experience, not a scientific assessment of water quality.

Sediment accumulation
The 2024 review reports an estimated sedimentation rate of 0.93 cm per year for Dal Lake, drawing on earlier studies. It is a review-reported estimate, not a fresh measurement, and should not be read as a uniform rate across the whole lake. Sediment accumulation is distinct from nutrient pollution: it adds material to the lakebed, while nutrient inputs alter water chemistry and can fuel plant growth. Catchment erosion can contribute sediment to lakes in the Kashmir Valley.
How climate change adds pressure
Snowfall, snowmelt and rainfall help shape the timing and amount of water flowing into Himalayan lakes. AP’s June 2026 reporting describes reduced snowfall, earlier snowmelt and more intense rainfall events in the Himalayan region, alongside irregular inflows and drier periods. These shifts can complicate water supply and compound existing stresses.

The available reporting does not quantify how much each climate mechanism has changed Dal Lake’s water level specifically. Nor does it establish a percentage of the lake’s degradation attributable to climate change. A careful account is therefore a combined-stressor one: pollution and land-use pressures are documented, while climate-related changes can disrupt the hydrology on which the lake depends. Environmental scientist Irfan Rashid of the University of Kashmir told AP that climate change “has impacted every sector of our economy,” referring to Kashmir broadly rather than Dal Lake alone. Associated Press, 30 June 2026
Why Dal Lake matters beyond its scenery
Dal Lake supports livelihoods and local activity as well as wildlife and tourism. The 2024 review describes Kashmir’s freshwater lakes as resources for food, irrigation and fishing, as well as recreation and tourism. Pollution and changes to water conditions therefore have stakes for people who live and work around the lake, not only for visitors or the landscape.

What the evidence says about response and responsibility
The pressures point to linked management needs: treating and conveying sewage, handling solid waste and removed vegetation responsibly, managing runoff and erosion in the catchment, and monitoring water conditions. These are among the subjects listed in the CAG’s Dal Lake audit chapter. The official landing page confirms the audit’s scope, but detailed claims about implementation, failures, spending or recommendations require the chapter findings themselves.
The 2024 peer-reviewed review brings together earlier studies of Dal, Wular and Manasbal lakes and identifies climate change, sedimentation, sewage, urbanization, agricultural runoff and waste disposal among the pressures affecting Kashmir Valley lakes. Its estimates and descriptions synthesize cited research rather than representing a new 2024 field survey. Read the 2024 review.
