Who is Sonu Barnala?
Sonu Barnala is the reported alias of Harwinder Kumar, whom the NIA accuses of supporting operatives linked to the killing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Vikas Prabhakar. Hindustan Times and The New Indian Express report that Kumar was deported from the UAE and arrested by the NIA after arriving at Delhi airport on October 1, 2026. The New Indian Express reports that he was produced before a Special NIA Court.
The reports describe Kumar’s alleged role as logistical and financial: investigators say he recruited or handled operatives, arranged weapons and their delivery, and received or transferred funds while based in the UAE. They connect these allegations to Germany-based Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) operatives Harjit Singh, alias Laddi, and Kulbeer Singh, alias Sidhu. These are investigators’ claims, not findings of guilt.
What is the Vikas Prabhakar murder case?
Vikas Prabhakar, a VHP leader, was shot dead at his confectionery shop in Nangal, in Punjab’s Rupnagar district, on April 13, 2024, according to Hindustan Times. The NIA case is identified by The New Indian Express as RC-06/2024/NIA/DLI. That outlet reports that the agency took over the case on May 9, 2024, and had filed three chargesheets by October 1, 2026. A chargesheet records an investigative allegation for court proceedings; filing one does not establish guilt, and the reports do not say the chargesheets have all been adjudicated.

Hindustan Times reports that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) alleged BKI operatives killed Prabhakar as part of a conspiracy to create communal unrest, at the behest of Pakistan-based BKI chief Wadhawa Singh, alias Babbar. This is the government’s characterization as reported by the outlet, not an independently established judicial finding in the available accounts.
What happened after Kumar’s deportation?
Reports say the NIA arrested Kumar at Indira Gandhi International Airport after his arrival on October 1. The New Indian Express says he was produced before a Special NIA Court; The Tribune reports that a Delhi court granted him two-day transit remand to the NIA Chandigarh unit. The reports reviewed do not establish what happened after that remand period or the later disposition of the case. An arrest and transit remand are procedural steps, not a determination of guilt.

What is known about the deportation timeline?
- April 13, 2024: Prabhakar was killed in Nangal, according to Hindustan Times.
- May 9, 2024: The NIA took over case RC-06/2024/NIA/DLI, according to The New Indian Express.
- April 17, 2026: The New Indian Express reports that a Red Corner Notice against Kumar was issued.
- June 19, 2026: The accounts differ. The New Indian Express says Indian agencies requested Kumar’s handover on this date; a Hindustan Times report describes UAE authorities as handing him over on June 19, while also reporting his deportation on October 1.
