The Associated Press reported that hundreds of CJP supporters demonstrated in Mumbai that day. The announced launch is confirmed; the available reporting does not establish the full schedule or turnout of later protests across India.
Why is CJP planning a protest?
CJP says its agitation is a response to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. CJP and other critics allege that the process has been administered improperly and could remove eligible voters from the rolls. Those are allegations, not established findings: the Election Commission says SIR is intended to remove duplicate and ineligible entries while keeping eligible voters registered, and the Commission and government deny wrongdoing. The Associated Press reported the competing positions on October 2.
CJP founder and national convener Abhijeet Dipke announced the planned campaign, saying it would begin in Mumbai and spread to cities across India. Hindustan Times reported that CJP described the issue as a threat to democratic participation; Dipke’s statement that there is “only an illusion of democracy right now” is his political characterization, not an independent finding. Hindustan Times reported the announcement and CJP’s position on October 1.
What does CJP want?
Dipke’s principal demands, as reported by Hindustan Times, concern the current chief election commissioner, the rolls used for elections and the selection of his successor. The Indian Express reported additional requests tied to SIR and records of decisions made during the exercise.

These are CJP’s requested remedies. The reporting does not establish that the Commission accepted them or that an independent inquiry has confirmed CJP’s allegations. The demands were detailed by The Indian Express on September 25 and by Hindustan Times on October 1.
What is disputed about SIR and the voter-roll figures?
The disagreement is not simply over whether the rolls are changing. It is over the purpose, administration and consequences of those changes: the Commission describes SIR as a way to remove duplicate or ineligible entries, while critics say the process risks disenfranchising eligible voters. The Commission and government deny wrongdoing.

The figures reported about deletions are not interchangeable:
- Up to 30% in some regions: The Associated Press said Election Commission data showed voter lists in some regions could shrink by as much as 30%. This is a regional figure as described by AP, not evidence of a 30% nationwide reduction or proof that eligible voters were removed.
- Around 13 crore since 2024: Dipke claimed that around 13 crore voters had been deleted from electoral rolls since 2024, according to Hindustan Times. This is an attributed CJP claim, not a verified count in the report; its scope is not reconciled with AP’s regional figure.
Neither report establishes a verified nationwide count of eligible voters removed.

What has been reported about disagreements inside the Commission?
The Indian Express reported that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had objected on the record at least 14 times over 10 months to decisions and processes connected with SIR. The Commission acknowledged notes but described them as part of its decision-making process; the account did not specify how the concerns were resolved. AP later reported that the Commission disputed calling the notes formal written objections, characterizing them instead as differing views and deliberations.
The accounts therefore disagree over how to describe the internal notes and what they signify. They do not establish that Kumar acted illegally or alone. The Indian Express’s September 25 report and AP’s October 2 account describe the respective positions.

What happened on October 2?
AP reported that hundreds of CJP supporters protested in Mumbai on Gandhi Jayanti, describing the rally as the start of a new period of nationwide demonstrations. That confirms a Mumbai event on the announced start date, but not a complete subsequent itinerary or total participation across the country.
AP also reported that police prevented student and civil-society groups from gathering at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi and detained dozens of protesters and some opposition leaders heading there. That was a separate gathering involving other groups, not the CJP protest in Mumbai.

What background matters?
The Indian Express noted that CJP had previously protested at Jantar Mantar over the NEET examination paper-leak issue, before Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on July 25. That sequence is background only; it does not show that CJP alone caused the resignation.
