The defining difference from freestyle is simple: Greco-Roman wrestlers cannot actively use their legs to complete an action or defend, while freestyle allows leg attacks.
Siwach’s silver and its place in India’s Asian Games record
News On AIR reported Siwach’s 0–4 final against Nakazato in the men’s 97kg event. Earlier, Siwach beat Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Ganbaatar 9–0 in the semifinal; Hindustan Times described that result as a technical-superiority victory.
Hindustan Times reported that India had won 65 Asian Games wrestling medals by 2026: 11 in Greco-Roman and 54 in freestyle. It framed Siwach’s silver as India’s first Greco-Roman silver at the Games since 1962, when Maruti Mane and Sajjan Singh finished second. These historical totals and the 1962 framing are those published by Hindustan Times.
How Greco-Roman rules differ from freestyle
The United World Wrestling (UWW) overview says Greco-Roman wrestlers use their upper bodies and arms: they cannot actively use their legs to complete an action or defend. Freestyle allows wrestlers to use any part of the body, including for leg attacks. That changes which takedowns and defenses are available, rather than making the styles interchangeable versions of the same match.

UWW’s overview gives examples of scoring actions: one point for moving an opponent out of the 9-metre circle; two for a takedown or exposing the opponent’s back; four for a standing throw; and five for a throw with grand amplitude. These are examples, not a complete technical rules guide.
What Siwach’s 9–0 semifinal score means
Technical superiority ends a bout when the required point margin is reached: 8 points in Greco-Roman, compared with 10 in freestyle, according to UWW’s overview. Siwach’s 9–0 semifinal win was therefore reported as a technical-superiority victory. The final score of 0–4 against Nakazato was a separate result, not a technical-superiority margin.

How the bouts are structured
Both styles use two 3-minute periods with a 30-second break in the general format described by UWW. Greco-Roman also features par terre situations in which an opponent can be placed on the ground; Hindustan Times describes a passive wrestler being put in that position once per period, with the opponent given 20–30 seconds to lift or turn them for points. For current officiating details, consult UWW’s International Wrestling Rules.
