Kathleen Kennedy said leaving the Lucasfilm presidency brought “a bit of relief,” describing the role of following George Lucas as an “incredible challenge.” She was responding to a question about whether stepping down felt bittersweet—not saying she regretted the job or was relieved to leave Star Wars. Kennedy is returning to full-time producing, according to Disney’s January 15, 2026 announcement.
Why Kennedy said she felt relief
GamesRadar reported that Kennedy made the remark during a Bloomberg Screentime exchange, in response to a question about whether leaving Lucasfilm felt “bittersweet.” The report attributes this answer to her: “I suppose there’s a bit of relief. These jobs are not easy and stepping into something like that that George [Lucas] had created was an incredible challenge.”
Her explanation focused on the responsibility of succeeding Lucas and leading a franchise that matters deeply to its audience. Kennedy said: “You’ve got people where this means a lot to them. But at the same time, the challenge is to try to create something new, something original. So finding that balance is really the toughest thing.” The remark describes the pressure of balancing audience attachment with creative change; it does not establish that she regretted her tenure or wanted to abandon the franchise.
How the Lucasfilm transition was announced
Lucasfilm says Lucas recruited Kennedy as president in 2012. Lucas soon retired and sold Lucasfilm to Disney. On January 15, 2026, Disney announced that Kennedy was stepping down after nearly 14 years and would return to full-time producing. Kennedy said of her appointment, “When George Lucas asked me to take over Lucasfilm upon his retirement, I couldn’t have imagined what lay ahead.”

Kennedy is returning to producing, not retiring
Disney said Kennedy would resume full-time producing, including work on The Mandalorian and Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter. Her departure is from the Lucasfilm presidency; the announcement does not describe a retirement from film and television work.
