That makes it a notable laboratory result—not a new definition of the second. Any change to the international standard remains part of a multiyear process that may lead to a redefinition in 2030.
What the new atomic clock did
The clock uses a single lutetium ion and was developed by researchers associated with the Centre for Quantum Technologies at the National University of Singapore. Live Science reported the result on October 1, 2026, describing the frequency reference as accurate to the 19th digit and 41% better than the previous record holder. The cited paper by K. J. Arnold and colleagues is titled “Lu+ optical frequency references with accuracy verified at the 19th digit.” Live Science’s report and the Nature paper record identify the result; the detailed performance figures here are attributed to the report.
“Accurate to the 19th digit” describes how precisely researchers established the clock’s frequency reference. It does not mean a consumer clock displays 19 decimal places, nor does it mean the device measures ordinary time in a way that is useful for everyday scheduling.
What “accurate” means—and what it does not
For clocks, accuracy and stability describe different qualities. NIST explains accuracy in terms of systematic uncertainty: how close a clock’s measured rate is to the ideal. Stability concerns statistical uncertainty—how quickly repeated measurements converge. A clock can be highly stable without being as accurate as another clock, and vice versa.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 2026 lutetium result is being described as an accuracy record. That claim is time-sensitive: records can change as laboratories improve their clocks, and the comparison should be understood in the context of the report’s publication date and stated metric.
For perspective, NIST announced an aluminum-ion clock result in July 2025 with a systematic uncertainty of 5.5×10−19. NIST described that result at the time as 41% more accurate than the previous record and 2.6 times more stable than any other ion clock. Those figures refer to the earlier aluminum-ion clock, not to the 2026 lutetium device. Its architecture paired an aluminum ion with magnesium for cooling and readout using quantum logic spectroscopy. NIST’s announcement provides the dated comparison.

Why use lutetium?
Live Science reports that the lutetium-176 system is less sensitive to external magnetic fields and temperature than alternatives, and that it can keep ticking through a 5-degree external temperature swing. The report credits a technique called hyperfine averaging with reducing environmental effects. These properties matter because outside influences can shift an ion’s frequency and complicate a precise measurement.
Study co-author Murray Barrett, a physicist at the National University of Singapore, told Live Science: “Our job is to make sure the runner can go the distance. Lutetium, as it turns out, is a natural born endurance athlete.” The analogy refers to the system’s reported resilience to environmental changes, not to a clock that is ready for consumer use.

Could this clock redefine the second?
Not by itself. The second is currently defined using a transition in cesium-133, as NIST explains. A more accurate optical clock can help researchers and standards bodies evaluate whether a future definition based on optical-frequency standards would be better, but one laboratory result does not change the SI.
The Bureau International des Poids et Mesures says the Consultative Committee for Time and Frequency is working toward updating the definition. Its roadmap describes an ongoing international process that may lead to redefinition in 2030; that is a possible outcome, not a settled deadline or a change already adopted. BIPM’s roadmap sets out the process.

What scientists might learn with clocks this precise
Ultra-precise clocks can also serve as tools for testing fundamental physics. Barrett told Live Science that such clocks may help investigate whether fundamental constants change over time. That is a potential application of increasingly precise measurements—not evidence that any constant has changed.
