Fremantle lost the 2026 AFL grand final by seven points, but that result alone is no reason to rush into list changes. The phrase “free from drama” comes from a The West Australian opinion-column headline, not a verified Fremantle rule. The accessible page confirms the column’s author and date but does not reveal its argument or examples, so it cannot establish what the writer means by “drama” or who the club should recruit.
What happened in the grand final
Brisbane defeated Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at the MCG in the 2026 grand final, a seven-point win, according to the AFL’s match report. Fremantle had led by 17 points with fewer than five minutes remaining; Brisbane then kicked the final four goals.
That sequence explains why the loss was so painful. It does not, by itself, show that a particular player, selection, or recruiting decision caused the defeat. The score and finish are match facts, not a list-management diagnosis.
What “stay calm” means immediately after a loss
ABC News reported on 27 September 2026 that coach Justin Longmuir urged the players to support one another, avoid being too hard on themselves, and take time before turning their attention to next season. His reported message was: “If we had’ve won, we would’ve won together. We lost, we lose together, so have each other’s back.”

That is a measured response to an emotionally difficult result: acknowledge the loss, maintain trust within the group, and give players time before making the next season the focus. It is evidence of Longmuir’s immediate message to the team, not evidence that the club has settled its recruiting priorities.
Why the column headline is not a club recruitment policy
Craig O’Donoghue’s 3 October 2026 The West Australian column is identified as opinion. The accessible page confirms the headline and subscriber access, but not the article text. As a result, it is not possible to say from that page how O’Donoghue defines “drama,” which player examples he uses, or what criteria he proposes.

“Free from drama” is subjective headline language, not a measurable standard shown to have been adopted by Fremantle. The available reporting does not establish that the club has a formal drama-free test for prospective recruits. Nor does it justify attributing a particular recruiting argument to the column beyond what its headline says.
What the reported list context does—and does not—tell us
ABC reported in 2026 that Fremantle ranked 13th in the league for experience, measured by games played, and had the league’s 11th-youngest list. Those are useful context for discussing the balance of experience and youth; they are not an official recruiting rule, and age alone does not determine the right list strategy.

The available facts do not establish that Fremantle should recruit older players, avoid younger ones, or target anyone because of the grand final finish. They also provide no verified figures on player misconduct, recruiting success rates, or how losing a grand final affects the next season. Any claim that this loss itself proves the need for a particular type of recruit would go beyond the evidence.
A more useful way to assess a prospective recruit
Rather than rely on the undefined label “drama-free,” a recruiting discussion can separate four practical questions:

- Role and list need: What football role would the player fill, and is that role a genuine need?
- Demonstrated performance: What evidence supports the player’s ability to perform that role?
- Availability: Can the player be expected to be available to play? The cited reporting does not assess any individual’s availability.
- Publicly evidenced conduct: What substantiated information is available about conduct, rather than rumour or a vague impression?
These are sensible questions for evaluating any recruit, but the sources cited here do not show that Fremantle uses this framework or has announced a corresponding policy. They also do not identify specific players for assessment.

Fremantle’s seven-point grand final defeat is a reason to review the season, not proof that a particular recruiting approach is necessary. Longmuir’s reported post-match message emphasized mutual support and taking time before focusing on next season.
