Minecraft’s new Ice Caves biome is available to try in experimental builds—not confirmed as part of the standard release. Mojang’s Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog, published September 30, 2026, says Ice Caves generate beneath colder Overworld biomes and introduces Ice Crystals, Frostbites and freezing-related combat mechanics. Java players can access testing through snapshots; Bedrock players use Preview or Beta, depending on platform.
What are the new Ice Caves in Minecraft?
Ice Caves are a new cave biome that generates beneath colder biomes in the Overworld. Mojang’s Bedrock Preview 26.60.29 changelog describes a landscape built mainly from Packed Ice and Calcite, with icicles hanging from ceilings and sometimes growing from the floor. Snow patches can appear, too.
Ores generate in pockets of Stone and Deepslate. Dirt, Granite and Glow Lichen do not generate in the biome. Strays and Frostbites can spawn there alongside the mobs normally found in caves.
What new blocks and mobs are in the Ice Caves?
Ice Crystals provide light
Ice Crystals are crystal-like blocks comparable to Amethyst Clusters. In the preview, they can generate on Packed Ice, emit light and be placed in any direction. They break if the block supporting them is removed. Because Glow Lichen is absent from Ice Caves, Ice Crystals are currently the biome’s only light source. Mojang notes that the crystals are smaller than intended in this preview, so their size may change.

Frostbites add freezing attacks
Frostbite is a new zombie variant that spawns in cold or icy biomes. It attacks with melee strikes that apply the Freezing effect and throws Ice Balls when fighting at a distance. Zombies and Husks that enter Powder Snow transform into Frostbites, according to the preview notes.
Frostbites are immune to freezing and are not slowed by either the Freezing effect or Powder Snow. The preview describes Ice Balls as projectiles that break on impact and deal 4 damage to entities, with damage scaling down as their velocity decreases.

How do freezing and Ice Balls work in the preview?
The experimental changelog says mobs vulnerable to freezing take five times the damage from it. It also describes brewing Ice Balls into Lingering Potion, Splashing Potion and Potion of Freezing. Arrows dipped into a cauldron filled with Potion of Freezing can become Arrows of Freezing. These are preview mechanics, not confirmed final-release details.

Players with an active Realms subscription who are eligible can create a free testing Realm, but Realms is an option—not a requirement for testing. Mojang warns that test versions can corrupt worlds. Back up a world before opening it in a preview or snapshot, or use a separate save folder.
Where to find Ice Caves
Look beneath low-temperature Overworld biomes. The preview changelog establishes that generation rule, but it does not provide coordinates or a guaranteed way to locate a cave in a particular seed. Generation details may also change while the feature remains experimental.

Is the Ice Caves biome in the standard Minecraft release?
That is not established by the cited official sources. Mojang’s Minecraft Live September 2026 recap presents ice caves as part of an upcoming game drop, while the September 30 Bedrock changelog documents them in Preview 26.60.29. Together, these confirm that the biome was revealed and available for experimental testing; they do not establish a standard-release date or guarantee that the mechanics will stay unchanged.
