Amazon and Flipkart began reviewing third-party internet-connected CCTV camera listings after a Reuters analysis found that more than 700 of roughly 770 listings it examined were models not found in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) public database of approved brands or cameras. That finding concerns approval records; it does not establish that those cameras were hacked, spying, or technically compromised.
Why are Amazon and Flipkart reviewing CCTV listings?
Hindustan Times reported on 1 October 2026 that the marketplaces had started reviewing third-party internet-enabled camera listings after Reuters compared models in marketplace listings with BIS’s public approval database. Reuters found that more than 700 of roughly 770 sampled listings were models it could not find in that database. The sample is a dated snapshot, not a live audit of either marketplace.
The same report said at least a dozen listings had been removed since Tuesday, including at least two EZVIZ models; Amazon showed those products as “currently unavailable” when Reuters reported. That does not establish their current listing or availability status. The reports describe marketplaces reviewing products sold by third parties, not Amazon or Flipkart manufacturing the cameras. Hindustan Times said Amazon declined to comment and Flipkart did not respond to Reuters’ questions.
What are India’s CCTV camera requirements?
India requires CCTV cameras sold in its market to meet the government’s CCTV Essential Requirements. A Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology statement published by the Press Information Bureau on 25 March 2026 identifies three additional requirements: documentation showing the origin of critical hardware components such as the system-on-chip, testing for vulnerabilities that could allow unauthorized remote access, and testing at accredited laboratories. The ministry said 507 CCTV models had been certified against the requirements at that time; this is a dated figure, not a current total.

A government order dated 9 April 2024 added CCTV cameras to the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021. Its provisions apply after six months from publication. The order also says reports from BIS-recognized laboratories are a prerequisite for a licence to use the Standard Mark. BIS’s Scheme II information lists CCTV cameras and CCTV recorders and refers to the CCTV Essential Requirements.
Does a missing BIS record mean a camera is spying?
No. Not finding a model in the public database is an approval-status finding, not proof of a security flaw or surveillance activity. Reuters’ comparison did not establish that every model absent from its database check had been hacked, had exposed footage, or had sent data abroad.

The requirements are intended to strengthen camera security, including by checking for vulnerabilities that could enable unauthorized remote access and documenting critical component origins. Reuters reported concerns about the possibility of sensitive footage being transferred abroad, but that concern is not evidence that a particular camera did so. Gulshan Rai, identified in the reports as India’s cybersecurity chief from 2015 to 2019, told Reuters: “A compromised camera can become both a surveillance risk and a cybersecurity entry point.”
How to check a CCTV camera before buying
- Identify the exact model. Read the model number in the product listing and compare it with the label on the package or device. Similar brand names or product families do not establish that two models share the same approval status.
- Search current BIS information. Look up the make and exact model in BIS’s current records and check that the registration entry identifies the same product. The official CCTV government order and BIS Scheme II page explain the applicable registration framework.
- Match the record to the item being sold. Check that the listing, package and BIS record agree on the model identity. If they do not, ask the seller or manufacturer to clarify before relying on the listing.
- Recheck close to purchase. Listings and marketplace availability can change. Neither the Reuters sample nor the reported removals establish which models are currently listed or approved.
The ministry’s 25 March 2026 statement describes the requirements and the 507-model count reported on that date. Neither it nor the marketplace coverage is a current model-by-model check of Amazon or Flipkart listings.

What the reported numbers do—and do not—show
The Reuters analysis indicates that many listings in its sample did not correspond to models it found in the BIS public database. It does not show what proportion of all CCTV cameras sold in India are unapproved, or establish the status of every listing now available. The ministry’s 507 certified models figure was current only as of its 25 March 2026 statement.
Reuters also described the Indian security-camera industry as worth $4.4 billion, without stating the year of the underlying estimate. It cited Counterpoint Research as saying Hikvision and Zhejiang Dahua Technology had 30% of the Indian market “last year”; Reuters published that figure on 1 October 2026, but did not provide the research release date. These industry figures do not determine whether any individual camera model is approved or secure.
