October 2026 brings three standout planet events: Saturn reaches opposition on October 4, the Moon occults Jupiter on October 6 for observers in a limited region, and Mars passes through the Beehive Cluster on October 11. The month also offers the Orionid meteor shower, though moonlight will hide some of its fainter meteors. Visibility and exact viewing times depend on where you are.
What planets are visible in October 2026?
The month’s observing sequence runs from Mercury low in the evening twilight to Saturn through much of the night, then Mars after midnight and Jupiter before sunrise. These are not equally easy targets: Mercury stays low in the west-southwest for mid-northern observers early in October, and Venus is very low in bright twilight. Venus reaches inferior conjunction on October 24.

- Venus: Very low in twilight early in October, making it challenging to see.
- Saturn: Rises around sunset near opposition and remains visible for much of the night.
- Mars: A morning-sky target, rising after midnight.
- Jupiter: Best placed before sunrise; on October 6, the Moon passes in front of it along a limited visibility path.

When is Saturn at opposition in October 2026?
October 4: Saturn opposite the Sun in the sky
At opposition, Earth lies between the Sun and Saturn, so Saturn appears opposite the Sun in our sky. It rises around sunset and stays up for much of the night, giving observers a long window to find it. NASA lists October 4, 2026, as the opposition date.

For telescope users, Saturn’s rings are tilted about 7 degrees from edge-on at this opposition, according to Joe Rao’s October planet guide. They will look relatively narrow in profile rather than dramatically wide open.
Where will the October 6 Jupiter occultation be visible?
Some locations see Jupiter disappear; others see a close pairing
An occultation occurs when one object passes in front of another and temporarily hides it. On October 6, the waning crescent Moon passes in front of Jupiter for some observers in North and Central America and some locations in Africa. Space.com describes visibility across eastern and much of central North America and adjacent southern Canada. These broad regional descriptions are not a substitute for checking the event from a specific location.

Outside the occultation’s visibility path, the Moon and Jupiter appear close together, but Jupiter does not disappear behind the Moon. Exact disappearance and reappearance times depend on the observer’s location, so there is no single time that applies everywhere. Check a current, location-specific astronomy planner for local contact times. NASA’s SKYCAL explains how event times can be localized by time zone, but identifies itself as archival and no longer updated, so it should not be relied on as the sole current planner.
For the North American circumstances described by Space.com, the Moon is about 20% illuminated and the event occurs before sunrise. Those details describe that source’s regional context, not a universal schedule.

When does Mars meet the Beehive Cluster?
October 11: look for Mars in Cancer
Mars passes through the Beehive Cluster (M44) in Cancer on October 11. The pairing is in the morning sky. Binoculars can help frame Mars and the cluster together, but they are optional; check a local sky chart or planetarium app for the rise and best-viewing time from your location.

Can you see the Orionids in October 2026?
Peak overnight October 21–22
The Orionid meteor shower peaks overnight from October 21 into October 22, according to NASA. A bright waxing gibbous Moon will interfere with fainter meteors. NASA recommends finding a dark location and watching in the hours before dawn after moonset. Give your eyes time to adjust, scan a broad area of sky rather than staring at one point, and check the cloud forecast before heading out.

Plan around your location and observe safely
- Use a current sky map or astronomy app configured for your location to check rise times and the Jupiter occultation’s local contacts.
- Expect event dates or local clock times to vary with time zone and observing location.
- Keep solar safety in mind: do not look at the Sun. Observe twilight targets only after sunset, and never look toward the Sun without appropriate purpose-built eye protection.
