Yes. Art-house theaters can use audience and ticketing data to make film and event communications more relevant, and a project involving nine Swedish cinemas shows how shared ticketing, customer records, analytics, and email marketing can work together. But the published account does not establish that AI was used or that the project increased attendance. For most theaters, the practical starting point is useful, permission-based segmentation; AI is an optional layer whose added value still needs to be tested locally.

What AI-driven audience targeting can—and cannot—do

A data model can help a theater decide which opted-in patrons may be interested in a particular screening, event, or film. Inputs might include ticket transactions, films previously seen, stated preferences, or broad location. The output is a communication choice: which audience group receives which message, and when.

That is different from having an algorithm choose the theater’s program. Audience information can help explain who is responding to current programming and help communicate distinctive offerings; it should not replace curatorial judgment about what to show.

It is also important to distinguish ordinary data-driven marketing from AI. A customer database, analytics dashboard, or rule such as “send this film announcement to patrons who attended similar films” does not, by itself, demonstrate machine learning. The documented Swedish cinema project describes ticketing, CRM, analytics, and email marketing, but does not say it used AI.

What the cinema-sector evidence shows

A shared-data project in Sweden

Europa Cinemas describes nine Swedish arthouse cinemas joining a project that combined a shared ticketing system with CRM, analytics, and email marketing. The project used previous purchases and preferences as a basis for targeting, with the stated aims of understanding audiences for European films and increasing attendance. The published project description reports its approach and goals, not independently verified attendance or revenue gains. Europa Cinemas’ project description

Data and AI adoption differ by market and cinema type

In its France-focused 2025 study summary, the Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée (CNC) says barely one independent cinema in four collects and uses audience data, often limited to films seen and place of residence. Circuits in the study collect and exploit audience information more broadly. CNC also reports AI tools in use at 21% of independent cinemas and 93% of circuits; the reported uses are chiefly communications and administration. These figures describe the French cinema landscape studied, not art-house theaters everywhere. CNC’s 2025 study of exhibitors’ digital practices

The same CNC summary says 69% of cinemas offered online booking in 2025, compared with 58% in 2021 and 48% in 2018. Among independent cinemas that offered it, online booking generally accounted for less than one quarter of sales. This is a reminder that online transactions may offer a useful signal, but they need not represent a theater’s whole audience.

Audience surveys add context to ticket records

Art House Convergence’s 2026 audience survey included more than 27,000 moviegoers connected with over 50 U.S. art-house cinemas and related organizations; fieldwork took place in April and May 2026. Respondents most often said they used recommendations from friends or family (62%), theater emails (61%), trailers or previews (60%), reviews (58%), and an individual theater’s website or social presence (53%) when deciding which movies to see. These are survey responses, not measured conversion rates, and participants were connected with participating cinemas rather than a representative sample of every U.S. community or non-attender. The survey also found that 86% of respondents valued indie theaters for showing more films outside the mainstream, while 74% valued interesting programs and events. Those results provide context for how theaters might describe their distinctive programming; they do not show that an algorithm should decide what gets programmed.

Choose an approach that fits the data and staff capacity

Approach What it involves When it may fit What is not established
Manual segmentation Use available ticketing, attendance, geographic, or self-reported preference information to form simple audience groups and send relevant communications. A theater with a limited dataset or modest digital capacity may be able to start with a small number of clear, maintainable groups. The sources do not quantify comparative cost or audience impact.
CRM and analytics tools Connect ticketing records to customer-management and campaign tools to examine behavior and manage outreach at greater scale. This resembles the operational model described in the Swedish project, provided the theater can support the integration and ongoing data work. The Swedish project description reports aims and methods, not causal outcomes; it does not identify machine learning.
AI or predictive models Use software to infer likely interest or recommend which audience groups may respond to a campaign. Consider this only when the theater has sufficiently useful data, staff capability, and a specific decision the model could improve. The cited cinema-sector sources do not establish an incremental benefit over careful segmentation or standard analytics.

The Independent Cinema Office’s data-driven marketing course covers behavioral, geographic, demographic, and attitudinal segmentation, as well as box-office data and planning. It is a training resource, not evidence that any one segmentation method guarantees better results. Independent Cinema Office: Data-Driven Marketing Online Course

A practical way to begin

  1. Set one local objective. Choose a concrete communication or audience-development question, such as re-engaging patrons who have not visited recently, or reaching likely viewers for a particular film or event. Avoid starting with “use AI” as the objective.
  2. Inventory what the theater actually holds. Review ticket transactions, attendance history, membership records, email permissions, survey responses, and any useful geographic or preference information. Do not assume that a small independent cinema has the comprehensive profiles available to a large circuit.
  3. Check usability and permission. Confirm that records are accurate enough for the proposed use and that contact permissions and data handling meet the requirements that apply where the theater operates. The cited sources are not legal guidance; obligations depend on jurisdiction and data practices.
  4. Build a simple, explainable segment first. Select a group connected to the programming decision—for example, opted-in patrons who attended a related film or event—and make sure staff can understand and correct who is included.
  5. Send a relevant message and compare response. Define an appropriate baseline before sending, then assess the result against the theater’s objective. Track whether the campaign reached its intended group and whether the response is meaningful to the theater, rather than treating a model’s prediction as proof of impact.
  6. Consider more automation only if it solves a real constraint. If manual work is too slow or existing tools cannot support a useful decision, assess whether CRM features or predictive software are worth the added integration, skills, and governance work.

How to judge whether a model is worth using

Compare a proposed tool or workflow on factors that affect whether a small cinema can use it responsibly and consistently:

  • Coverage and quality: Do the records reflect enough of the theater’s audience to support the intended decision, including patrons who do not book online?
  • Permission and governance: Can the theater explain what information it uses and manage it in line with applicable requirements?
  • Integration burden: Can the system work with existing ticketing and CRM tools without disproportionate manual effort?
  • Staffing and skills: Is someone able to maintain the data, review segments, and act on results?
  • Transparency and correction: Can staff understand why a person or group was selected and fix obvious errors?
  • Audience relevance: Does the message connect to a real interest or access need, rather than merely increasing message volume?
  • Fit with the theater’s purpose: Does targeting help audiences discover the theater’s distinctive films and events without letting predicted demand dictate the program?

What remains unproven

The sources describe cinema-sector practices, adoption, training, survey responses, and project aims. They do not provide controlled evidence that AI-driven targeting itself increases attendance, ticket revenue, or audience diversity, nor do they establish an ROI percentage. A theater should treat a predictive model’s promised lift as a hypothesis to evaluate with its own data, not as a proven result.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

For a small theater with sparse records, basic segmentation and better measurement may be more useful than an AI system. For a larger organization with broader data and staff resources, automation may be worth exploring. In either case, the decision should follow the local goal, the quality and permitted use of the data, and the ability to assess the outcome.
