Commercial flights have several safeguards for emergencies, but none makes a pilot who is already inside the cockpit harmless. Reinforced flight-deck doors mainly keep unauthorized people out; crew procedures, alerts to air traffic control and an emergency landing can help contain an incident. Reports say Flydubai flight FZ1073 diverted to Tabuk after a cockpit altercation on September 30, 2026, and landed safely. The official investigation is ongoing, so the exact sequence and motive are not settled.
What happened on Flydubai flight FZ1073?
FZ1073 was flying from Dubai to Tel Aviv when an altercation in the cockpit led to an emergency and diversion to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The National reported that the aircraft descended from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet in about a minute. Associated Press reporting says the wounded captain opened the cockpit door and other crew members regained control before the aircraft landed. The National reported injuries to both pilots and no serious passenger injuries.
In a later report, the Associated Press attributed to UAE authorities an allegation that the co-pilot attacked the captain with a cockpit crash axe and tried to seize the controls. That is an allegation reported during an active investigation, not a final finding. Flydubai said the reasons and motives were unknown and subject to formal investigation; the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority described the event as a security incident and said it was investigating its causes and circumstances.
Passenger totals in the Associated Press reports conflict: an initial explainer said 174 people were aboard, while an October 3 follow-up said 182. Without an authoritative final count, neither figure should be treated as settled.

How can a pilot threaten a flight from inside the cockpit?
A cockpit door is an access-control barrier, not a restraint on authorized flight-deck occupants. After the September 11 attacks, reinforced, lockable doors became a central security measure against unauthorized entry. Al Jazeera describes contemporary flight-deck doors as designed to resist forcible intrusion, with access normally controlled electronically. Aircraft and operator systems differ, and the door’s purpose is to keep intruders out—not to prevent a pilot already inside from acting violently.
That is the insider-threat gap: screening and access controls can reduce risks from outside the flight deck, but they cannot eliminate the possibility of dangerous behavior by someone who has legitimate cockpit access. The FZ1073 reports illustrate that distinction; they do not establish how often such events occur or provide a general aviation safety rate.

What safeguards can help when a pilot turns violent or becomes incapacitated?
Crew response
Cabin crew have responsibilities in security events and pilot incapacitation, including communicating with the operating pilot. Al Jazeera describes those duties at a high level. In FZ1073, reporting says the captain opened the door and other crew members helped regain control. The reported outcome shows how people on board responded in this particular event; it is not proof that procedures always work.
Alerts and diversion
A MAYDAY call is a radio distress call. Transponder code 7700 signals a general emergency, while 7500 indicates unlawful interference or a possible hijacking. Al Jazeera reported, based on flight-tracking data, that FZ1073 first sent 7700 and later 7500. These alerts help air traffic control recognize and manage an emergency; they do not control the aircraft or physically stop an attacker. A diversion can bring the aircraft toward a suitable landing, but its success depends on the circumstances and the crew’s ability to operate the plane.

What if both pilots cannot fly?
If no pilot can control the aircraft, the consequences can be severe. Aviation analyst Saj Ahmad, whom Al Jazeera identified as chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, observed: “Where both pilots are unable to fly, the consequences are pretty self-evident if no one is flying the airplane.” That is a general observation, not a quantified estimate of risk. The FZ1073 reporting says other crew members stabilized and landed the aircraft, but it does not establish a general procedure that passengers can follow.
Must two people always be in the cockpit?
Not as a universal rule established by the sources available here. After Germanwings Flight 9525 crashed in 2015, killing all 150 people aboard after the first officer locked the captain out, EASA temporarily recommended keeping at least two authorized people in the cockpit at all times. Al Jazeera reports that in 2016 EASA moved to a risk-based approach that allowed equivalent safeguards. It also summarizes European measures introduced after the crash, including psychological assessments before pilots began flying and psychoactive-substance and alcohol testing from 2018. These are European policy developments, not proof of a current worldwide standard or of Flydubai’s specific requirements.

The two approaches involve different trade-offs. A second authorized person may be able to deter or respond to a threat, while rules about who may enter the flight deck also require suitable access controls, training and procedures. The cited account does not establish that either model guarantees safety.
| Approach | What it means | Potential benefit | Limitation | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prescriptive two-person recommendation | Keep at least two authorized people in the cockpit at all times. | A second person may be present to respond if a pilot is incapacitated or becomes a threat. | It requires clear rules for who may be the second person, their training and access; presence alone cannot guarantee prevention. | Al Jazeera says EASA made this a temporary recommendation after the 2015 Germanwings crash. |
| Risk-based safeguards | Allow equivalent mitigations rather than require the same cockpit-occupancy measure everywhere. | Operators can use safeguards suited to their assessed risks and procedures. | The sources do not specify which safeguards every operator currently uses or show that one set of mitigations is equally effective in every situation. | Al Jazeera says EASA adopted a risk-based approach in 2016. The cited account does not verify Flydubai’s current operator-specific rules. |
Can passengers enter the cockpit in an emergency?
Passengers should not treat cockpit entry as an emergency response plan. Flight-deck access is controlled, and the reporting that passengers and crew subdued an attacker on FZ1073 describes what happened in that event—not a standard or safe instruction for other passengers. In an emergency, follow cabin-crew directions and do not attempt to access the cockpit.

What can be concluded about flight safety?
FZ1073 landed after a reported cockpit altercation, but one successful landing cannot show that every safeguard will work in every incident. The case highlights both the layers meant to manage emergencies and their limits: cockpit doors address unauthorized entry, alerts help air traffic control respond, and crew actions may help stabilize a flight. The UAE investigation had not established the definitive sequence or motive in the reporting available on October 3, 2026.
