You can run the encoder on a computer or use optional encoder hardware. A single 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable full-length replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before going live
- A YouTube channel that is verified, has had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s minimum live-stream age requirement of 16.
- White-noise audio and a dark visual that you created or are authorized to use.
- Streaming software or an encoder that can send the audio and video to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow does not require a dedicated hardware encoder.
- A stable computer and internet connection if you run the encoder locally. The stream depends on that equipment and connection staying available.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. The key functions as the stream’s password and address, so keep it private.
Prepare the black-screen video and white-noise audio
Make or choose audio you have rights to use
Use a recording or synthesis you created, or audio for which you have permission. Do not assume that a sound is safe to reuse just because it is described as white noise or is available online. Keep records of any licenses, and avoid sampling audio from other channels.
Use a black or near-black visual
The feed should contain an actual dark video image alongside audible noise. You can prepare a dark visual as part of a video asset or create it in your encoder setup. YouTube’s encoder documentation describes the streaming workflow, but it does not prescribe a particular black-frame generator or white-noise synthesis method. Check the outgoing picture so it does not accidentally show a desktop, notification, or other unintended imagery.

Check the combined feed before broadcasting
- Confirm that the noise is audible and not silent or distorted.
- Check the image is black or near-black as intended.
- Listen for clipping, abrupt cuts, or gaps if the audio repeats.
- Make sure the video and audio are yours or cleared for this use.
Create the YouTube livestream and connect an encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and create a live stream. Set the title, description, audience and other broadcast settings for the stream.
- Choose the encoder workflow. In YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup, locate the server URL and stream key for the broadcast. The exact layout may change, so use the current labels shown in Live Control Room.
- Enter the connection details in your encoder. Paste YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key as confidential; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Set the encoder’s input to the prepared feed. Select the dark video and white-noise audio, whether they are supplied by your prepared media or generated in your software setup. The cited YouTube workflow does not prescribe a universal resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or encoder preset for this particular stream; follow the current recommendations shown by YouTube and the settings available in your encoder rather than guessing at a one-size-fits-all value.
- Start the encoder. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check both image and sound in the preview.
- Complete the go-live step in Live Control Room when prompted. Watch the YouTube player after the stream begins to verify that the public feed matches the encoder preview.
- Monitor the broadcast. Check for silence, clipping, unintended imagery, and disconnections. Reconnection behavior depends on the encoder and setup; YouTube’s cited guidance does not give one universal 24/7 recovery procedure.
Choose how to keep it running overnight

There is no basis here to name a best device or promise uninterrupted service from either local setup. If you already have a computer and encoder, you may not need to buy additional hardware.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 stream?
Do not rely on YouTube to preserve one continuous 24/7 broadcast as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, while streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a recording, keep a local copy. If a YouTube replay matters, consider ending and starting shorter sessions, while recognizing that this changes a single uninterrupted broadcast into separate streams.

Copyright and monetization considerations
Live copyright checks can interrupt a broadcast
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the feed with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the matched content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even with a license, a rights holder may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Original audio and visuals, plus retained license records where relevant, reduce avoidable rights issues.
Monetization is not guaranteed for a repetitive format
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams and call for original, authentic content rather than content considered mass-produced, generic or repetitive. A fixed dark image with repeating noise deserves particular caution: YouTube’s general policy does not pre-approve this exact format, and it does not establish that every ambient stream is automatically ineligible. Do not assume this presentation will qualify or earn revenue.
