Space.com reports liftoff at 18:32 UTC and says the first-stage booster landed back at Vandenberg about 7.5 minutes later. Among the mission’s technology demonstrations was a Google Project Suncatcher prototype designed to gather early data on computing hardware in space—not to provide an operational orbital data-center service.
What happened on Transporter-18?
SpaceX’s mission listing identifies Transporter-18 as a Falcon 9 launch from Space Launch Complex 4E (SLC-4E) in California on October 1, 2026. The listing showed 18:18 UTC as the scheduled launch time; Space.com reports that the rocket actually lifted off at 18:32 UTC.
The mission carried 130 payloads, according to Space.com. Deployment began 54.5 minutes after launch and took about 11 minutes. Not every payload was released directly by the Falcon 9: four orbital transfer vehicles carried 41 payloads for deployment later in orbit.
That total is a count of payloads, not necessarily a count of individual satellites. The mission included different kinds of spacecraft and hosted payloads, as well as vehicles carrying payloads onward. Space.com reported that Transporter-1, in January 2021, carried 143 payloads—a higher total than Transporter-18.

How a Transporter rideshare works
Transporter is SpaceX’s dedicated small-satellite rideshare program. Instead of arranging a launch for each spacecraft, customers share capacity on one rocket. Integrators such as Exolaunch help coordinate customer logistics, launch-campaign operations, spacecraft integration and deployment.
SpaceX’s Falcon Payload User’s Guide describes the broader launch-service process, including payload processing, mechanical and electrical compatibility, adapter integration, encapsulation inside the fairing, spacecraft separation and post-flight reporting. Some payloads separate from the launch vehicle; others travel aboard an orbital transfer vehicle before being released later.

Exolaunch said it deployed 46 customer satellites on Transporter-18. That is the company’s portion of the mission, not an alternative count for the 130 total payloads reported by Space.com. Exolaunch also said the launch was its 50th mission and brought its reported cumulative total to 890 satellites deployed across 50 missions. Those are company-reported figures, not an independently audited industry tally.
What was on the mission?
The rideshare combined spacecraft with different purposes and levels of maturity. The list below highlights reported examples; it is not a complete manifest.

| Payload or group | Purpose or significance | What the launch established |
|---|---|---|
| Google Project Suncatcher prototype | Testing early concepts for running Google’s tensor processing unit (TPU) hardware in space. | The prototype launched; its mission was to collect in-orbit data, not to demonstrate a functioning commercial orbital data center. |
| Starfish Space’s first Otter servicing satellite | A spacecraft for on-orbit servicing technology. | Space.com reports the satellite flew on Transporter-18; the launch itself does not establish the performance of a servicing mission. |
| Cowboy Space’s Reason-1 | A technology demonstration related to transferring energy from low Earth orbit to a receiver on the ground. | Cowboy Space described its aim as proving out power beaming. It should be treated as an early demonstration, not established large-scale power delivery. |
| Star Catcher’s Protostar | An early-stage energy-transfer concept identified by Axios among the mission’s payloads. | Its presence on the rideshare is not proof of operational orbital energy infrastructure. |
| Other customer payloads | The mission included varied spacecraft and hosted payloads, including cubesats and microsats, according to Space.com. | The available reports do not establish a complete per-payload manifest or a single count of satellites that would cover every kind of payload. |
What is Google Project Suncatcher testing?
Google’s September 24, 2026 project update describes Suncatcher as an early research effort to test TPU hardware under spaceflight stress, radiation and extreme thermal conditions. The Transporter-18 flight offered a chance to gather data in orbit; the launch alone does not show how the hardware performed there.
Why put computing hardware in orbit?
Google’s stated rationale is that solar panels in low Earth orbit could receive up to eight times more solar power than on Earth. That is Google’s explanation for exploring the concept, not a measured result from this flight. The company also says its ground proton-beam testing found TPU tolerance to total ionizing radiation doses greater than those it expects during a five-year space mission. That is a preflight test claim, not an orbital result.

Why cooling and communications are difficult
Spacecraft cannot rely on air moving across electronics to carry heat away. Google says cooling orbital data centers would require heat pipes and radiators to move and release heat. The company also says future satellites will use laser links to communicate. Both are engineering elements of the concept, not evidence that a network of orbital data centers is already operating.
What Google says comes next
Google’s September update said it planned to test a laser link between two satellites in 2027. That was a future plan in the company’s post, not a completed milestone. Google also said individual TPU components can experience up to 50–100 g during launch; this is an engineering description, not a measurement specific to Transporter-18.
