Repair your computer when a diagnosed fault has a clear, affordable fix and the machine will still meet your needs with software support you can rely on. Replace it when repair is uncertain or costly, parts or service are unavailable, or the computer will remain too limited or unsupported. Start with a written diagnosis and estimate—not the computer’s age or a fixed percentage of replacement cost.
Compare the repair with a replacement that fits your needs
There is no universal repair-cost percentage that determines the right choice. Compare the full repair cost—including labor and likely follow-on work—with a replacement that can actually handle your workload. Then consider how much useful, supported service each option is likely to provide.

Computer age alone cannot settle the question: the model, fault, estimate, workload, support status, and parts availability all matter.
Get a diagnosis and written estimate first
Ask the repair provider to identify the suspected fault and itemize parts, labor, shipping, and any diagnostic fee. Find out whether the estimate includes taxes and whether further work may be needed after the computer is opened or tested.

- Ask whether the failure appears isolated or points to other components that may also fail.
- Check whether the required parts are available and how long the repair is expected to take.
- Ask what warranty, if any, applies to the repair and replacement parts.
- Confirm whether your data or storage may be affected, and make a backup before authorizing work if possible.
The FTC recommends considering a product’s average lifespan, likely failures, and repair difficulty when weighing repair options. Those considerations can inform the discussion, but they do not provide a universal lifespan or a fixed repair-versus-replace price rule. FTC guidance on repair restrictions and repairability.
Check warranty, service-plan, and local repair protections
Before paying, read the written warranty or service agreement. Check its duration, covered failures and parts, exclusions, claim process, repair location, shipping and labor charges, and whether the promised remedy is repair, replacement, or refund.

In the United States, the FTC says independent repair does not automatically void coverage for unrelated work that remains covered under the conditions in its guidance. Warranty terms and circumstances still matter, and U.S. guidance should not be assumed to apply in other countries. FTC warranty guidance.
A paid extended warranty or service contract is separate from a product’s included warranty. Compare its total cost, deductibles, exclusions, claims process, shipping obligations, and additional coverage against the protection you already have and the realistic likelihood of needing a repair. EU right-to-repair rules
For EU consumers, the European Commission reports that right-to-repair rules began applying on 31 July 2026. For products technically repairable under EU law, consumers can request repair from manufacturers. The rules provide for repair free of charge or at a reasonable price within a reasonable time, an extension of at least 12 months to the legal guarantee when repair is chosen within the seller-liability period, and accessible information about repair services and spare parts. Which protections apply depends on the product category and applicable repairability requirements. The EU repair platform is planned for 2027; it is not yet described as available. Factor operating-system support into the decision
Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 computers continue to function, but standard Windows 10 no longer receives Microsoft security updates, feature updates, or technical assistance. This is a software-support issue, not evidence that the computer has a hardware fault. The guidance here applies to standard Windows 10; other operating systems and Windows editions may have different lifecycle policies.

If your computer runs Windows 10, check its Windows 11 eligibility with Microsoft PC Health Check or Windows Update rather than guessing from its age. Microsoft lists upgrading a compatible PC, enrolling an eligible device in Consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU), or replacing it with a Windows 11-compatible computer as options. Microsoft says ESU can protect eligible enrolled consumer devices through 12 October 2027; check the terms and eligibility for your device. A Windows 10 support deadline does not automatically make a hardware repair pointless. If the computer can run Windows 11, repairing it may remain a reasonable option. If it cannot, compare the cost and duration of ESU with replacement and consider your security needs over the period you expect to keep the computer. Do not treat a compatibility result as a hardware diagnosis.

Check whether the computer is realistically repairable
Repairability depends on the particular model and fault. The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre identifies removable fasteners, tools that are accessible, access to commonly failing components, available spare parts, and clear repair information as useful conditions. These factors can affect both the price and practicality of a repair. Joint Research Centre explainer on repairability.
If you are considering a do-it-yourself repair, identify the exact model and find appropriate instructions before buying tools or opening the computer. A precision screwdriver kit may suit some jobs, but no generic kit is guaranteed to fit every computer. If the repair involves delicate components or you are unsure how to proceed, a qualified repair provider may be the safer choice.
Back up data before repair, replacement, or recycling
Back up important files before work that could affect the storage drive. Before wiping, trading in, recycling, or handing over a computer, verify that the backup is complete and that you can access the files you need. Microsoft describes Windows Backup as one option for moving to a new Windows device; review the Windows transition information before relying on a particular migration method.
Once you have confirmed your data is safe, consider reuse, trade-in, or responsible electronics recycling instead of putting the computer in ordinary waste. Programs and accepted devices vary by location. EU equipment-flow figures provide context, but they are not computer-only statistics: Eurostat recorded 7.6 million tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment placed on the EU market in 2012 and 14.4 million tonnes in 2022; the Joint Research Centre reported around 4 million tonnes recycled or prepared for reuse, citing Eurostat. Make the decision in order
- Identify the fault. Get a diagnosis and written, itemized estimate; ask about likely related failures.
- Check coverage and rights. Review your warranty or service contract and any applicable local consumer protections.
- Check support and capability. Confirm the computer can meet your workload and security needs after repair.
- Compare full costs. Weigh repair, likely follow-on work, and disruption against a suitable replacement—not a cheaper device that cannot do what you need.
- Protect your data. Back up and verify important files before repair or migration, then choose repair, replacement, or responsible reuse and recycling.
