Canada’s official September 27 readout of Anand’s meeting with Jaishankar in New York says they welcomed upcoming high-level engagements, but it does not announce a visit to India. The distinction matters: the trade mission’s dates cannot be treated as Anand’s dates, and the diplomatic visit remains a media report unless governments confirm it.
What Canada and India discussed most recently
On September 27, Anand and Jaishankar met on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to Global Affairs Canada’s readout, they discussed implementing the bilateral roadmap, negotiations toward a Canada-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), and long-term energy cooperation, including renewable energy, critical minerals and civil nuclear energy. They agreed to stay in close contact and welcomed future high-level engagement.

The readout establishes the issues discussed in New York, not the itinerary described in the October 1 news report. Anand said, “As one of the world’s fast-growing and most dynamic economies, Minister Anand noted India’s importance as a key partner for Canada.”
Why CEPA and trade feature in the diplomatic context
Both governments have stated an objective of concluding CEPA negotiations by the end of 2026. In its September 2 account of Foreign Office Consultations, Global Affairs Canada said the two sides reaffirmed that goal and set an ambition to more than double bilateral trade to CAD 70 billion (INR 4.65 lakh crore) by 2030. That figure is a shared government target, not a forecast or a result already achieved. The consultations also covered energy and critical minerals, science and technology, education, security and defence, culture, people-to-people ties and consular matters. The separate trade mission led by Sidhu is part of this commercial track. The Trade Commissioner Service says it is intended to help Canadian exporters position themselves in India while trade negotiations progress. The reported October trip would follow a series of official contacts, but those contacts do not confirm it. Carney visited India from February 27 to March 2, 2026. In their joint statement, the leaders welcomed four reciprocal ministerial-led trade and investment engagements—two in each country—and commemorated 79 years of diplomatic relations. Anand’s previous official visit to India took place October 12–14, 2025, during a broader multi-country trip.
