India’s gross GST collections reached ₹2,03,521 crore in September 2026, up 14.7% from ₹1,77,365 crore a year earlier, according to Hindustan Times. The gross figure is before refunds; the same report put net collections after refunds at ₹1,76,520 crore.
What was India’s GST collection in September 2026?
The reported gross total was ₹2,03,521 crore, or about ₹2.04 lakh crore. Hindustan Times reported the comparison figure for September 2025 as ₹1,77,365 crore and the year-on-year increase as 14.7%. These are gross-to-gross figures: they compare collections before refunds in each September.
Why are gross and net GST collections different?
Gross collections are counted before refunds are deducted. Net collections are the amount after refunds. Hindustan Times reported September 2026 net collections of ₹1,76,520 crore, up 18.1% year on year. The reported gross and net totals differ by ₹27,001 crore; that is the arithmetic difference between the two reported figures, not a separately reported refund total.
Use the gross figure when describing the headline collection total, and identify the measure whenever quoting a number. Comparing gross revenue with net revenue—or comparing one measure in September 2026 with the other in September 2025—would give a misleading growth comparison.

What do the reported components show?
News On AIR reported that both domestic and import-related revenue increased, with the import-linked increase faster. Its figures are reported breakdowns; the September 2026 official GST Portal table was not available in the reporting cited here to verify the components independently.
Domestic and import-related revenue
- Domestic gross revenue was around ₹1.38 lakh crore, up more than 10% year on year, according to News On AIR.
- Import revenue was ₹65,525 crore, with import-linked collections rising around 26%, according to the same report.
Tax components
News On AIR reported CGST of ₹37,772 crore, SGST of ₹45,363 crore and IGST above ₹1.20 lakh crore. These figures should be treated as the broadcaster’s reported breakdown rather than as a verified reconciliation of the full gross total. The report’s rounded domestic and IGST figures are not precise enough to reconstruct the headline total.

Which transactions does the September collection reflect?
The collection month and the underlying transaction period are not the same. Hindustan Times reported that September collections reflect transactions undertaken in August. So the September headline describes revenue collected in September, not necessarily economic activity that took place during September.
What does the increase say about the economy?
The reported composition indicates growth in both domestic and import-related receipts, with imports growing faster. It does not, by itself, establish why collections increased. The reports cited here do not provide a named official explanation attributing the rise to consumer demand, compliance, tax rates or any other single cause.

Where can the official monthly figures be checked?
The Ministry of Finance has directed readers to the GST Portal for monthly collection information, including gross and net data and IGST settlement information. The portal’s News and Updates and Statistics areas are identified as sources for monthly and historical data in a 2024 PIB notice. The Ministry’s September 2023 release illustrates the reporting convention: it presents gross collections and tax components separately from post-settlement revenue. That earlier release explains the terminology but is not evidence for September 2026 figures.
