The U.S. Treasury Department said on October 1, 2026, that automatic enrollment was complete and more than 60 million additional eligible children had a Trump Account “ready to be claimed.” That is Treasury’s reported number of accounts created and available to claim—not a count of accounts parents have claimed, funded, or are actively using.
What Treasury’s 60 million figure means
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “With automatic enrollment, over 60 million more eligible children now have an account ready to be claimed.” The October 1 announcement describes accounts established through automatic enrollment for eligible children with valid Social Security numbers. “Ready to be claimed” is an important distinction: an account being created does not mean an adult has claimed it, added money, or begun managing it. A parent or guardian must claim the account to manage it and permit contributions. Treasury also says claiming is required for the child to receive the one-time pilot contribution.
How to claim a child’s account
Treasury directs parents and guardians to the official Trump Accounts app, accessible through TrumpAccounts.gov. The app’s claim process includes identity and relationship verification, review of the child’s information, and acceptance of account terms. Follow the current instructions linked from the official site, since app features and steps can change.

The IRS identifies Form 4547 as the election form for establishing a Trump Account. In general, a child must be under 18 at the end of the year the election is made and have a valid Social Security number. Treasury says automatic enrollment has already established accounts for eligible children with valid SSNs, but claiming remains necessary for an adult to manage the account. Who qualifies for the $1,000 pilot contribution?
Having a Trump Account and qualifying for the one-time $1,000 Treasury pilot contribution are separate questions. The pilot contribution is not promised to every child with an account. Under the IRS instructions, the child must meet all of these conditions:

- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Be born after December 31, 2024, and before January 1, 2029.
- Have a valid Social Security number.
- Have no previously processed election for the pilot contribution.
An authorized individual must make the election, and Treasury says the account must be claimed for the child to receive the contribution. Check the IRS instructions and the official account site for the applicable election process and eligibility details.
Contributions, limits, and tax treatment
A Trump Account is a type of traditional individual retirement account established for a child, with special rules during its “growth period.” Contributions during that period can come from the pilot program, qualified general contributions, eligible employer contributions, rollovers, and other sources.

For the IRS’s stated rules, contributions from sources other than the specified pilot, qualified general, and rollover contributions generally share a combined annual limit of $5,000. Eligible employer contributions count toward that limit. Individual contributions made during the growth period do not qualify for a section 219 deduction. The IRS instructions describe the exclusions and account rules in detail; consult them for how a particular contribution is treated.
When can the money be withdrawn?
Withdrawals are generally restricted during the growth period. The IRS instructions allow specified rollovers, returns of excess contributions, and distributions after the beneficiary’s death. This is not an account a child can freely draw on for ordinary expenses during that period.

After the growth period, most traditional IRA rules generally apply. That does not mean withdrawals become tax- and penalty-free at age 18: ordinary traditional IRA distribution tax rules may apply, subject to exceptions. The IRS instructions are the source for the governing rules and exceptions.

That announcement said contributions would remain in SPYM until investment-election functionality became available. It is a dated statement, not confirmation of what families can select now. Check the official app or Treasury site for current availability before assuming an account holder can choose among the named funds. The announcement does not establish that any fund guarantees a return, and the named lineup is not a personal investment recommendation.
Use official channels for account access
Start at TrumpAccounts.gov for the current app, claim instructions, and support information. Avoid entering a child’s Social Security number or other sensitive details through links in unsolicited messages; navigate to the official site directly. Treasury’s July 2026 app announcement described balance and performance viewing and contribution features, but those details may have changed.
