A teacher at Children’s World Early Learning Center in Canton Township intervened after a toddler pulled a loaded, holstered handgun from a backpack on September 28, 2026. The gun was not fired, and no one was injured. Prosecutors later said it had been passed among children before staff stepped in.
What happened at the Canton Township day care
Canton Township police responded Monday, September 28, to a report that a child had a firearm at Children’s World Early Learning Center. According to the Associated Press, the toddler removed a holstered handgun from a backpack in the classroom. A teacher noticed and intervened, then contacted police. Prosecutors said the gun had been passed to other children before staff intervened; reporting does not say that it was fired or that anyone was injured.
The Canton Township Police Department announced that it was investigating a weapon at a day care on September 28. The department’s notice identifies the incident as occurring at the center. The later account of the classroom sequence and the weapon’s condition was reported by the Associated Press on October 2.
What charges were reported
FOX 2 Detroit reported that the parents were arraigned on October 1. The mother was charged with unsafe storage, described in the report as a 93-day misdemeanor. The father, whom the report identified as a Detroit-area police officer, was charged with fourth-degree child abuse, described as a one-year misdemeanor. The defendants were released on $10,000 unsecured personal bonds, ordered to surrender their firearms while the case was pending, and scheduled to return to court on October 30, according to the station’s report.

These are reported charges and court developments, not findings of guilt. The AP reported that the handgun was not the officer parent’s work weapon. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy called the case “very unsettling,” the AP reported October 2.
Safe-storage information for Michigan families
The AP summarized Michigan law as requiring firearms to be locked up at home when children are present. That brief summary is not a complete explanation of the statute or legal advice. For practical local information, Canton Police says it provides free gun safety locks and firearm-safety resources through its department resources.

When choosing or using a storage device, make sure it locks the firearm securely, is appropriate for that firearm, and can be used consistently. No lock or storage method should be treated as a guarantee of safety. Canton Police Services Director Joseph Bialy said, as quoted by FOX 2: “While this incident was unintentional, the responsibility for the safe and secure storage of firearms rests unequivocally with the firearm owner.”

The AP reported that the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office had handled nearly two dozen gun-access cases since 2024, citing spokesperson Maria Miller. That figure describes the office’s caseload; it is not a statewide or national count, and it does not establish how often firearms are brought into day-care settings.
