The vote did not put the amendment into force: the Associated Press reported on 2 October that upper-house review and ratification were still pending.
What happened in Algeria’s lower house?
The People’s National Assembly, Algeria’s lower house, adopted the amendment on Thursday, 1 October 2026, according to the official Algerian Press Service. The Associated Press reported the vote as 307 in favor, 17 opposed and seven abstentions.
Justice Minister Lotfi Boudjemaa said after the vote, “The adoption of the death penalty for these acts is the appropriate legal response to eradicate these crimes,” according to AP’s English rendering of his statement.
Is the amendment law, and is it in force?
No—not on the status reported by AP on 2 October. The lower house’s vote was one step in the process; AP said the measure still required review by Parliament’s upper house before ratification. The available reports do not establish a later upper-house decision, an implementation date or that the amendment has entered into force.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These are distinct stages: a chamber may adopt a bill without the full legislature completing its review; ratification and entry into force are further questions. The lower-house vote alone therefore does not mean the new penalties can already be applied.
Which crimes could face the death penalty?
Official reporting describes the proposed and adopted provisions as covering more than forest arson. The summaries below reflect the Algerian Press Service’s description of the proposed text and the state broadcaster’s account of the adopted provisions; they are not a substitute for the full adopted bill, which is not included in those reports.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does passage mean executions will happen?
No. A vote on a proposed penalty is not an execution, and it does not establish that the amendment has taken effect. AP reported in 2026 that Algeria had not carried out an execution since 1993, when three Islamic militants convicted over an attack at Algiers International Airport were executed. That history is separate from the bill’s pending legislative status.
