Recent government contracts show sustained interest in space-based solar power (SBSP), but they fund research, component development and feasibility work—not an operating orbital power plant. The projects span solar cells, wireless energy transmission, grid integration and mission design, while major engineering and environmental questions remain.
What is space-based solar power?
SBSP is the idea of collecting solar energy in orbit and delivering it to receiving infrastructure on Earth. The UK government describes a system that gathers sunlight in high Earth orbit and beams power to a fixed point on Earth. ESA describes a radio-frequency approach in which energy is sent to ground receivers connected to the electricity grid. These are proposed system concepts, not descriptions of an established commercial service. UK government overview; ESA overview.
Not every concept transmits power in the same way. ESA has also reported studying a reflector concept that would redirect sunlight toward existing solar farms on the ground, potentially as a precursor to radio-frequency systems. The differences matter: collecting and converting sunlight, transmitting or redirecting it, assembling hardware in orbit, and connecting the receiver to the grid are separate parts of the problem.
What the UK and U.S. funding supports
UK: technology development and mission feasibility
The UK Space Based Solar Power Innovation Competition supports projects starting at Technology Readiness Level 1 to 6. Its four funding areas are wireless power transmission, high-concentration solar photovoltaics, SBSP energy-systems engineering and mission feasibility. The competition page states grant provision of up to £3 million, with potential for an additional amount of up to £3 million; those figures describe the program’s provision, not the total already awarded. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The project awards cover components as well as questions that affect an entire power system. Listed work includes lightweight, radiation-tolerant solar cells; wireless transmission; antenna beam steering; grid integration and system economics; and mission architecture. One example is CASSiDI, led by Space Solar Engineering Ltd: the company received £1,198,802 to define a baseline modular concept design. That award supports design work; it is not evidence that the design has been built or shown to deliver grid power. UK award details.
A separate 2023 announcement described £4.3 million in government funding for UK innovation projects. This is an announced funding total, distinct from the competition page’s stated grant provision. 2023 UK announcement.

United States: space-photovoltaics research
On 31 August 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy announced a space-photovoltaics funding opportunity of up to $12 million. Its topics include low-cost, durable space-grade solar cells, manufacturing scale-up and validated prototype demonstrations in space or near-space environments. The listed application deadline is 8 October 2026; applicants should check the DOE notice for current status and requirements. The $12 million is a ceiling for the opportunity, not confirmation that the full amount has been awarded. DOE opportunity and announcement.
This call concerns photovoltaics for space applications. Its scope alone does not establish funding for, or demonstrate, a complete system that beams electricity from orbit to a grid-connected receiver on Earth.

How ESA is assessing feasibility
ESA’s SOLARIS effort brings policy makers, energy suppliers and space companies together to assess whether SBSP could be feasible. Its work includes system-concept studies, related science and technology development, and investigation of radio-wave effects and the challenges of assembling large structures in orbit. ESA has identified Thales Alenia Space Italy and ENEL in a system-definition study, and Arthur D Little with ENGIE in a reflector-concept study. These are examples of participants, not a complete list of the field. ESA SOLARIS account.
ESA SOLARIS lead Sanjay Vijendran has noted that satellite telecommunications already beam small amounts of radio-frequency energy to ground stations. That analogy points to an existing physical principle, not proof that the much larger power levels and system scale proposed for SBSP are practical. The scale-up questions include how to assemble, maintain and operate large orbital infrastructure, and how it would interact with orbital debris and space weather. ESA also says the effects of radio waves on the atmosphere, human health and ecosystems require investigation. ESA’s explanation of the concept and open questions.

What the awards do—and do not—show
Taken together, the contracts and funding announcements show organized public and industry investment in SBSP research. They do not show that an operational, grid-scale space solar plant exists or that the economics and engineering have been settled. UK-funded teams include universities, energy companies and space-sector organizations; their participation demonstrates a spread of technical work, not commercial deployment.
The UK government’s study program includes a 2025 small-scale study asking whether smaller systems could enable early commercial adoption in the 2030s. That is a scenario being examined, not a forecast that adoption will happen. The official landing page describes the study question but does not state its detailed results. UK study landing page.
