For job seekers, the practical rule is simpler: independently verify the employer and recruiter, and do not pay money or hand over sensitive information until the job and hiring channel are confirmed.
What the job-scam figures show—and what they do not
The Federal Trade Commission said in 2025 that it received reports of more than 105,000 job scams in 2024, nearly three times the 2020 count, with reported losses exceeding $513 million. These are FTC reports and reported losses, not a census of every scam or every victim.
In a December 2024 data spotlight, the FTC estimated about 20,000 task-scam reports in the first half of 2024, compared with about 5,000 reports in all of 2023. The agency estimated these scams made up 38.8% of sampled job-scam reports in the first half of 2024, versus 5.6% in 2023, 1.6% in 2022 and 0.6% in 2021. The estimates came from hand-coding a sample of reports, and the 2024 figure covers six months while the other annual comparisons cover full years.
Complaint totals depend on what people report and how agencies classify reports; many incidents may go unreported. They should be read as evidence of reported fraud, not a complete measure of prevalence.

How common job scams work
Task scams: fake commissions, real deposits
A task scam often starts with an unsolicited text or WhatsApp message offering vague online work. The tasks may be described as “app optimization” or “product boosting.” A site or app may show a rising commission balance, and the worker might even receive a small initial payout to build confidence. The pitch then shifts: deposit your own money to unlock another batch of tasks or withdraw the supposed earnings. The displayed balance is not proof that earnings exist; the FTC says money deposited into these schemes is lost. Cryptocurrency is commonly requested.
The FTC’s guidance is direct: “Never pay anyone to get paid.” If an online job asks you to deposit money to release earnings, stop rather than sending another payment.

Impersonated employers and fake listings
Fraudsters can copy a real company’s branding, post on a genuine job board, and conduct a false interview. A familiar company name or job-board listing does not establish that the recruiter represents the employer. The FBI warns that scammers may seek personal information or money; stolen information can be used to take over accounts or open financial accounts in a victim’s name.
What the AI-related employment reports say
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) 2025 annual report, published in 2026, lists 691 employment complaints referencing AI and $12,550,185 in associated reported losses for the 2025 reporting year. The report describes possible voice deepfakes or voice spoofing in remote applicant interviews. In some cases, audio and on-camera movements reportedly did not align; the apparent aim may have been to gain access to private computer networks.

This is an AI-referenced subset of employment complaints, not a count of all AI-enabled job fraud and not an estimate of AI’s share of job scams. The FTC’s rise in reported job scams and IC3’s AI-referenced employment complaints are separate findings. The figures do not establish that AI caused the overall increase.
How can I tell if a job offer is a scam?
Verify the opportunity through channels you find independently, rather than relying on links or contact details supplied by the recruiter. Use this checklist before sharing sensitive information or accepting instructions involving money.

- Find the employer’s official site yourself. Navigate to its careers page and check whether the exact opening is listed. A listing on a job board alone is not verification.
- Verify the recruiter’s identity and contact route. Compare the email domain and contact details with those on the employer’s official site. Be cautious if a purported company recruiter uses a non-company email domain or an identity that cannot be verified through the company.
- Refuse upfront payments and transfers. Do not pay screening fees, buy equipment from a supposed employer, provide credit-card details, deposit money to unlock task earnings, or use your bank account to transfer company money. The FBI says of requests to move company funds through a personal account: “A legitimate company will not ask you to do this.”
- Check whether requests for personal information make sense for the hiring stage. Verify the employer and channel before providing sensitive details. A legitimate employer may need payroll information after hiring; the timing and verified channel matter.
- Treat remote interviews as a chance to verify, not just perform. If a video or voice interview seems inconsistent—for example, the audio and visible movements do not align—pause and confirm the recruiter through the company’s official contact route. Do not install software or grant access to your computer merely because an interviewer asks.
Why is a recruiter asking me to pay for equipment?
A request to buy equipment from a supposed employer, especially through a link or seller the recruiter directs you to, is a warning sign identified by the FBI. Do not send money or card details to proceed. Contact the company using a phone number or email address found independently on its official website and ask whether the recruiter and purchasing process are genuine.
What to do if you have already paid or shared information
- If money or financial details were exposed, contact your bank or payment provider promptly. Ask whether it can stop or reverse suspicious transactions and follow its instructions to secure affected accounts.
- Report the listing to the job site and the company being impersonated. Use contact information from the company’s official website, not the suspect message.
- Report suspected internet crime to the FBI’s IC3 and suspected consumer job fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Keep copies of messages, emails, job postings, payment receipts and account details that may help a bank, platform or agency understand what happened. Avoid sending more money to someone promising to recover funds unless you have independently verified who they are.
