Elon Musk initially said on October 1, 2026, that Tesla had cut AI5 memory to 72GB of LP5 and AI6 memory to 144GB of LP6. A report published October 3 says he revised AI5 to 96GB in an October 2 post; AI6 remained at 144GB. Musk said the changes would help secure enough volume for Optimus production and reduce costs, and predicted a negligible performance effect. That prediction has not been independently demonstrated.
What changed in Tesla’s AI5 and AI6 memory announcements?
The figures are statements attributed to Musk and reproduced by news outlets, not capacities confirmed in an October Tesla technical data sheet. The reported sequence is:

In the initial post, Musk wrote, “We cut our RAM in half for the Tesla AI5 chip (now 72GB of LP5) and 1/3 for AI6 (now 144GB of LP6).” Drive Tesla later quoted his explanation for the AI5 revision: “Actually, we decided to nudge AI5 up a little to 96GB, as Tesla would otherwise be the only company using the min RAM version of LP5”. Why did Musk say Tesla reduced the memory?
Musk said the reductions were necessary to secure enough supply for Optimus production and would “greatly” reduce cost. He did not quantify the expected supply or cost savings in the cited reports. The explanation concerns Tesla’s stated manufacturing priorities; it does not establish how the resulting chips will perform in a production robot. Will the memory change affect Optimus performance?
Musk said he expected a negligible effect, arguing that memory bandwidth is a more important constraint than total capacity. Capacity is how much data memory can hold; bandwidth is how quickly data can move between memory and the processor. A large capacity does not, by itself, establish that data can be moved quickly enough for a workload.
That is Musk’s rationale, not a demonstrated result. The cited reports provide no independent benchmark or real-world Optimus comparison measuring performance with the earlier and revised capacities. It is therefore not possible to conclude from these announcements alone that the change will—or will not—affect Optimus.

How does the Micron estimate compare?
Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra was reported as estimating that humanoid robots generally could use more than 200GB of memory and multiple terabytes of storage per robot. This is an industry-level estimate, not a Tesla-specific requirement or a tested comparison with Optimus. It describes a broader category of potential robot designs and workloads, so it should not be treated as evidence that Tesla’s reported AI5 or AI6 configuration is inadequate.

Tesla’s earlier investor materials provide dated planning context, but they predate Musk’s October memory announcements and do not verify the new capacities.

- Tesla’s Q4 2025 update, published in January 2026, said AI5 and AI6 production was planned for 2027 and 2028, respectively. It also described an AI5 target of 50 times AI4 performance, based on 10 times raw compute, nine times memory capacity, and five times hardened block quantization and softmax. Those are earlier design targets, not measured Optimus results after the October announcement.
- Tesla’s Q1 2026 update, published in April, said AI5’s final chip design was complete and discussed semiconductor fabrication expansion.
Neither update confirms the October memory figures or establishes that the earlier production schedule remains unchanged.
