On October 2, 2026, President Donald Trump said the United States might ask European countries to release diesel reserves to help lower fuel prices. His remark—“We may do that. They have some diesel”—was tentative: it did not confirm a formal US request or an agreement by European countries. Separately, the Associated Press reported that G7 nations planned a broader release of oil and fuel products, including substantial diesel at the start.
What Trump said—and what it does not confirm
Trump’s October 2 comment was reported as a response to whether the US might seek a release of European diesel stocks. He also forecast that oil prices would fall sharply when the Iran war ends; that was his prediction, not an established outcome. Anadolu Agency reported the exchange.
The comment establishes that Trump raised the possibility. It does not establish that the US submitted a specific request, that Europe accepted one, or how much diesel any European country might release.
What the European Commission said
At an October 1 briefing, Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said the Commission was in close contact with member states and had high-level contacts with the US administration, but did not confirm a specific US demand or a list of contacts. She described the Commission’s role this way: “Our job is to coordinate the Member States’ position at the International Energy Agency.” The Commission briefing transcript also explains that any International Energy Agency stock releases are voluntary. The IEA organizes possible releases and recommends volumes; member states notify the agency of their releases, with EU coordination through the Oil Coordination Group.

On October 2, the Commission rejected a diesel export ban and said the EU was ready for collective action through the IEA. It also said the Oil Coordination Group had found no immediate EU security-of-supply issue and that supplies were stable for the time being. The Commission nevertheless described affordability as a serious concern. It said gas prices had risen 140% and diesel prices had doubled since the end of February; those are figures from the Commission’s briefing, not an independent price analysis. The October 2 briefing contains its response.
How much diesel Europe holds is not the same as how much it can release
The Commission said the Oil Stocks Directive requires member states to hold 90 days of stocks, but does not prescribe what share must be diesel rather than crude oil or other products. Member states therefore have discretion over the composition of their stocks. The Commission points to Eurostat for emergency and strategic stock figures and cautions that those data are not updated daily. Its October 1 briefing explains these limits.

Al Jazeera, citing Eurostat figures for June 2026, reported that EU countries and the United Kingdom held about 52 million metric tonnes of combined gas oil and diesel stocks, including nearly 38 million tonnes of emergency reserves held by EU countries. Those totals are not a diesel-only figure, do not mean all the stock is available for release, and include the UK in the wider total. Al Jazeera describes the stockholding rule as at least 90 days of net imports or 61 days of domestic consumption, whichever is greater; that formulation is Al Jazeera’s description and differs from the Commission briefing’s simpler account of a 90-day requirement. The reported G7 plan is broader than a European diesel commitment
The Associated Press reported on October 2 that G7 nations planned to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products over the coming weeks, starting with substantial amounts of diesel. The figure covers oil and fuel products, not diesel alone, and the AP report does not establish a final country-by-country European diesel contribution or its schedule. It also reported Trump joined leaders’ discussions about European diesel stocks. A separate claim by Trump that Europe had agreed should not be treated as confirmation of a country-level commitment. What a release could—and could not—do
A reserve release can add supply to the market, but the cited reporting does not quantify how a European drawdown would affect US or European pump prices. Nor does a reported plan specify how much emergency cover would remain after a release or how quickly stocks would be replenished. The Associated Press quoted an energy analyst who warned that drawing down reserves might temporarily reduce retail prices while leaving less emergency cover and creating uncertainty about refilling stocks. That is an analyst’s assessment, not a guaranteed result.
