Bernie Sanders’s 2016 campaign explicitly urged supporters to keep organizing after the presidential contest ended. In a June 16 address, Sanders called for grassroots political work at local and state levels, including running for public office. The effort’s clearest documented legacy here is that stated ambition—and the organization inspired by the campaign—not proof that the campaign caused later victories or a lasting movement.
Sanders said the work should continue after election day
In his June 16, 2016 address, Sanders framed political change as a continuing effort: “Election days come and go. But political and social revolutions that attempt to transform our society never end.” He urged supporters to carry the campaign’s grassroots energy into local and state politics, rather than treating the end of the presidential race as the end of their involvement.
He named concrete routes for participation: run for school boards, city councils, county commissions, state legislatures, and governor. He also connected public service and organizing to policy challenges including health care, education, climate and energy, and infrastructure. These were Sanders’s stated goals for supporters, not evidence by themselves that the campaign produced particular later outcomes.
What the campaign reported about its scale
In that same June 16 address, Sanders reported that his campaign had received more than 12 million votes, won 22 state primaries and caucuses, and involved hundreds of thousands of volunteers. Those figures are his contemporaneous account of the campaign.

A January 2, 2016 campaign press release, archived by The American Presidency Project, reported 2,513,665 donations through December 31, 2015, saying the total surpassed the prior record set by Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection committee. This is a count of donations, not of individual donors.
Our Revolution was inspired by the campaign, but the distinction matters
Our Revolution became an organization associated with the effort to continue the campaign’s political work. The Federal Election Commission’s record in MUR 7683 gives a more precise account of Sanders’s relationship to it: Sanders and the organization denied that he established it, and the FEC said the available record did not indicate that he played an active or significant role in its actual creation. The report nevertheless described Sanders as the organization’s key influence. “Inspired by the campaign” is therefore better supported than saying Sanders founded or controlled Our Revolution.

Contemporaneous Washington Post reporting on the organization’s August 24, 2016 launch described electoral targets alongside disagreements over leadership and fundraising. It reported that eight of the initial 15 staff members had left before launch. That is context about the transition into an organization, not a measure of the wider campaign’s impact or a verdict on Our Revolution’s later work.

The contemporary address documents an explicit plan to channel campaign participation into local and state politics. The launch reporting and FEC record add context about the organization that followed. Together, these sources establish what Sanders advocated and how Our Revolution was related to him; they do not establish how many former campaign supporters later organized, won office, or did so because of the 2016 campaign.

Sanders’s later writing continues to describe grassroots activism in movement terms, but it is his own retrospective perspective, not an independent evaluation of outcomes. Readers seeking that perspective can consult his book Our Revolution: A Future to Believe In; its account should be read as the candidate’s view rather than as a neutral assessment.
