Why Browser Attacks Can Bypass Endpoint Detection

Browser attacks may blend into ordinary browser activity or use extension permissions, creating a visibility gap for some endpoint tools. EDR still helps when paired with browser oversight and layered web protection.

Browser attacks can slip past endpoint detection when malicious activity runs inside ordinary browser processes, uses granted extension permissions, or blends into routine web traffic. That is a visibility gap—not proof that endpoint detection and response (EDR) is useless, or that every browser attack evades every product. Coverage varies by product, configuration, and version.

Why a browser attack can be hard for EDR to recognize

EDR monitors activity on managed devices, including processes and, depending on the product, network connections and other events. But not every endpoint tool exposes browser behavior at the same level of detail. A Google Chrome Enterprise report says some EDR solutions have incomplete visibility into browser-related network events; that vendor report does not establish how often products across the market miss attacks.

Many attacks do not need to look like a newly installed executable. They may operate through the browser, an extension, or a web page, using processes and connections that are also part of normal work. If the relevant browser or extension events are not collected or joined to other telemetry, investigators may have too little context to identify suspicious behavior promptly.

People often describe this as an “EDR blind spot” or say that “browser attacks bypass endpoint protection.” Those phrases point to a possible coverage mismatch, not a universal outcome.

How browser attacks blend into normal activity

Extensions can use the access they were granted

Browser extensions can request access to websites and browser APIs. An extension with permission to read or modify page content may therefore reach information displayed in the browser. Chrome’s developer guidance explains that content scripts interact directly with a webpage’s DOM and run in the same renderer process as the page. As the guidance puts it, “Extensions have access to special privileges within the browser, making them an appealing target for attackers.” Chrome for Developers: Stay secure

This does not mean every extension is malicious. It does mean an extension’s permissions matter: if the extension is compromised or malicious, the granted access can give it a route to page data without behaving like a separate, obviously suspicious application.

Data collection can happen inside the browser

Microsoft documented a campaign involving malicious AI-assistant extensions that collected URLs and AI chat content, reloaded with the browser to persist, and periodically sent collected data over HTTPS. The extensions were distributed through the Chrome Web Store and worked with Chrome and Edge. Microsoft reported approximately 900,000 installs and activity across more than 20,000 enterprise tenants; these are campaign-specific telemetry figures, not estimates of how common malicious extensions are overall. Microsoft Defender Security Research Team, 2026

Because collection and transmission can occur as part of browser use, the key clues may be extension behavior, the pages accessed, or the destination and timing of connections—not simply the launch of an unfamiliar executable.

Web pages can deliver payloads through browser features

Google Chrome Enterprise’s report describes attackers using HTML5 and JavaScript, including HTML smuggling, to deliver payloads. It also describes extension behavior that can change through dynamic configuration and obfuscated modules. These techniques can complicate static inspection and make behavior harder to characterize from a single snapshot. Google Chrome Enterprise, Browser Security Threat Report

Trusted tools and encrypted traffic can look routine

Attackers may use built-in tools or ordinary applications so their activity resembles normal system and network behavior. CISA describes living-off-the-land techniques as a way to blend malicious actions with routine activity and reduce their visibility in default logging. CISA, Cybersecurity Advisory AA23-278A

Likewise, HTTPS is normal for browser communications, so seeing HTTPS alone does not establish whether a connection is safe or malicious. Microsoft described periodic uploads over HTTPS in the extension campaign above. Encryption does not mean every security product is blind to a connection; endpoint tools may still observe metadata, application context, or destinations, depending on their capabilities and configuration.

What endpoint protection can still do

EDR and related endpoint controls remain valuable when they collect relevant events or can act on a suspicious connection. Microsoft documents Defender for Endpoint alerts for suspicious web connections and network protection that can block malicious or unwanted websites in Edge and other browsers. The documented alerts can provide the device, requesting application, URL, and recommended response actions. Microsoft Learn: Web protection

Process mitigations can also restrict child-process creation in applications where that restriction is compatible. Microsoft cautions that blocking child processes may disrupt legitimate behavior, such as an application launching a browser or another utility; test the impact before broad deployment. How to reduce the visibility gap

  • Govern extensions: allow only extensions with a clear business need, and keep permissions as limited as practical. Chrome’s guidance notes that limiting permissions limits what an attacker could exploit if an extension is compromised. Chrome for Developers: Stay secure
  • Investigate across telemetry: review browser and extension events alongside process and network activity. Check which browser details your endpoint product actually collects and retains rather than assuming browser activity is fully covered.
  • Use layered web protection: combine endpoint alerts or blocking with URL and domain investigation and an incident-response workflow. A suspicious connection is more useful when responders can tie it to the requesting application, device, and destination.
  • Apply process restrictions selectively: test child-process controls against the applications employees use, then monitor for compatibility issues before expanding them.
  • Compare tools by evidence, not a blanket ranking: assess browser-process and extension visibility, URL detail, blocking at browser, endpoint, and network layers, policy controls, investigation retention, and the compatibility cost of mitigations. The cited material does not provide a comparable independent test for ranking EDR vendors.
