What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by recording the exact error code and when the failure occurs—during download, restart, or installation. Then run the Windows Update troubleshooter and follow the next step that matches the code or problem. Error codes point to possible causes, not guaranteed diagnoses; use them to narrow down the repair rather than guessing.
Before troubleshooting, note the error and protect your files
Write down the full code shown in Windows Update and, if available, the feature-update version. Note whether the process stalls while downloading, after a restart, or during installation; that helps distinguish a connection or download issue from a later installation failure. Before advanced repair steps, back up personal files. Microsoft recommends a backup before the procedures in its Windows Update troubleshooting guide.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter first
Windows 11
Open the Get Help app and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Microsoft says it runs diagnostics and attempts to fix many update problems. When it finishes, restart the PC if prompted, then go to Settings > Windows Update and check for updates again. If the problem remains, use the exact code to choose a focused next step.
Windows 10
Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 as well as Windows 11, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says it no longer receives free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. For Windows 10 navigation, follow the instructions applicable to that version in Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide; avoid assuming a Windows 11 Settings path or Get Help workflow is identical.

Use the error code to choose the next step
Microsoft lists the following as possible causes and troubleshooting directions. A code alone does not prove which component failed.
| Error code | Possible issue Microsoft identifies | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Corrupted Windows Update files or cache | Run the troubleshooter. Microsoft also lists clearing the SoftwareDistribution download cache. |
| 0x800705b4 | An update took too long or was interrupted | Check the internet connection and run the troubleshooter. |
| 0x80240034 | An incomplete update or connection issue | Check connectivity, then run the troubleshooter and retry. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient disk space, or an issue with .NET Framework or another component | Check available space and follow the troubleshooter. Microsoft suggests trying without a VPN in applicable cases. |
| 0x80070057 or 0x80080005 | Corrupted files, permissions, or configuration issues | Run System File Checker and the troubleshooter. |
| 0xC1900101 | A potentially incompatible driver | Investigate drivers using guidance from the device or driver vendor; the code does not identify a specific driver by itself. |
| 0x800F081F, 0x80073712, or 0x80246007 | Missing or corrupted system files, or an incomplete download | Run System File Checker and the troubleshooter. |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service may be stopped or disabled | Check the service status using Microsoft’s instructions. |
For the relevant code’s detailed instructions, see Microsoft’s error-code troubleshooting guide. Some sections include older Windows 10 navigation; use steps that match your Windows version rather than copying a menu path that does not appear on your PC.
If the update is stuck or interrupted, check connection and storage
Check the connection and retry
For a slow, interrupted, or incomplete download, make sure the PC has a stable internet connection. Restart the PC, then check Windows Update again. These checks are especially relevant to codes such as 0x800705b4 and 0x80240034, but a code should still be treated as a clue rather than a definitive diagnosis.
Free space carefully
Microsoft says feature updates typically need 6–11 GB or more of free space, but the requirement varies with the update route, optional content installed, and other updates on the PC. As Microsoft puts it in “Free up space for Windows updates”, “The total free disk space your device requires to complete an update varies.” Treat the Windows Update prompt on your device as the more specific guide.
Review Settings > System > Storage and use Storage Sense or Cleanup recommendations to remove files you recognize and no longer need. Do not delete unfamiliar files just to meet a target. If Windows Update displays Fix Issues and offers external storage, Microsoft specifies a device with at least 10 GB free for that workflow. External storage may help, but Windows can still require additional internal free space; it is not a guaranteed workaround. See Microsoft’s storage guidance for details.

Repair corrupted system files when the code points there
For the file-corruption codes listed above, Microsoft recommends System File Checker as well as the troubleshooter. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, then run the commands below in order. Wait for each command to finish before starting the next:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
When both scans finish, restart the PC and check Windows Update again. Use Microsoft’s code-specific instructions if either command reports that it could not complete or repair files; do not treat a clean scan as proof that every possible update problem is resolved.
Try a supported installation or repair route if the update still fails
Windows Update Assistant
If Windows Update does not offer the feature update automatically, Microsoft’s Windows Update Assistant can manually install the latest feature update on compatible x86/64 PCs. It does not run on ARM-based PCs. Check the Assistant’s compatibility and instructions before using it; it is a manual route, not a fix for every underlying driver, component, or storage problem.
Recommended Free Tools
Reinstall the current Windows 11 version to repair it
On supported Windows 11 installations, open Settings > System > Recovery and look for Fix problems using Windows Update. This option reinstalls the current version of Windows to repair system files and components. It may not appear on an older installation or a device managed by an organization. If the option is available, review Microsoft’s instructions and conditions before starting.
Quick Recap
When to stop and get more specific help
- If a code-specific Microsoft procedure does not match your Windows version, stop rather than applying an outdated Settings or service path.
- If the code suggests a driver problem, identify the relevant device and use its vendor’s guidance instead of guessing which driver to remove or replace.
- If a PC is organization-managed, ask the IT administrator before attempting a recovery workflow that may be unavailable or governed by company policy.
- Do not jump to a clean installation as an early troubleshooting step; it can cause data loss, and many update errors have less disruptive remedies.
