If Windows 11 keeps changing your default apps, first identify the exact file type or link protocol that changed, then set its preferred app in Settings > Apps > Default apps. If several associations change together at sign-in on a work or school PC, ask your IT administrator to check whether a policy is applying them. The cause depends on the device; the available Microsoft guidance does not point to one universal reset bug.
How to restore the default app that changed
- Open Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Search for the affected file extension, such as
.pdf, or the link type or protocol that opens in the wrong app. - Select the result, then choose the app you want to use for that association.
- To review an app’s associations instead, find and select the app on the Default apps page, then change the listed file and link types as needed.
Windows manages defaults by file type, link type, and app association. Choosing a preferred app for one type does not necessarily change every type or protocol it can handle. Microsoft’s instructions for changing default apps describe the Settings process.
Why does Windows 11 keep changing my default apps?
The timing and scope of the change help narrow down what to check. A single changed association, several changes at sign-in, a change after an operating-system upgrade, and a browser choice that cannot be changed point to different checks. A new app or an app update may also be relevant, but the cited Microsoft guidance cannot identify what caused a particular user’s change.
Only one file type or protocol changed
Return to Default apps and reset that exact association. Check that the app you choose is installed and registered to handle that type. Do not assume that resetting a browser or PDF app for one association also resets its other file types and protocols.

Several associations change at sign-in
If this happens on a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT to inspect its default-association policy. Microsoft’s ApplicationDefaults Policy CSP documentation says, “When set, default associations will be applied on sign-in to the PC.” That setting is for administrators to manage; changing registry values is not a supported consumer fix for a managed policy.
For Windows 11 version 22H2, the policy documentation describes XML attributes that affect when associations are applied: Version controls when suggested associations are applied, while Suggested="true" makes an association apply once for the current version rather than at every sign-in. An administrator can make it apply once again at a later sign-in by incrementing the version. Ask IT to verify the configured policy and XML rather than trying to override it locally.

The change followed a Windows upgrade
Microsoft’s deployment guidance for default application associations notes that some inbox app handlers can be reassigned during an operating-system upgrade. This is not evidence that every routine Windows update resets defaults. The guidance, last updated August 26, 2021, covers exporting and importing associations for Windows deployment; administrators should validate its behavior on the Windows release they manage. DISM is a deployment tool, not the first troubleshooting step for an individual user.
You cannot change the default browser
Check whether the PC is running Windows 11 in S mode. Microsoft Support says, “When you’re using Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default web browser, and Bing is the default search engine.” Switching out of S mode is permanent, so review Microsoft’s instructions for switching out of S mode before deciding whether to do it.

What to check if the change keeps returning
- Record the affected association: note the extension, link type, or protocol and the app Windows selects. This is more useful than saying only that “the browser” or “PDF app” changed.
- Note when it changes: check whether it happens immediately, after an app installation or update, at sign-in, or after a Windows upgrade.
- Check who manages the device: on a work or school PC, ask IT about Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM). Microsoft documents policy mechanisms for managing defaults in its app-default configuration guidance.
- Confirm Windows edition and S mode: S mode specifically constrains the default browser choice; management policy may constrain other associations.
- Reset the exact association in Settings: if no policy or S mode restriction applies, select the desired app for the specific type rather than relying on a broad “make this app default” assumption.
The available official guidance does not establish how often Windows 11 changes defaults, how many users are affected, or a consumer procedure that prevents every future change. The device’s affected association, Windows build and edition, sign-in timing, recent app changes, and management status are needed to diagnose a specific case.
