Pakistan’s Frequency Allocation Board (FAB) has awarded Rohde & Schwarz (Pvt) Ltd. a contract for equipment at a new spectrum-monitoring station at FAB headquarters in Islamabad. The Pakistan Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) record lists three digital RF receivers/analyzers and four RF sensor systems, with training, a one-year warranty and ten years of hardware and software after-sales support. The award is intended to strengthen monitoring and interference detection; it does not establish that interference has already fallen or that a nationwide rollout is complete.

What is FAB doing to monitor 5G spectrum in Pakistan?

FAB is adding monitoring equipment at a new station in its Islamabad headquarters. The PPRA contract record identifies the station and two equipment lots: three digital RF receivers (analyzers) and four RF sensor systems. It records the contract signing date as August 21, 2026, and an awarded amount of Rs. 196,308,167. The tender value listed on the same record is Rs. 260,000,000. PPRA contract record

The procurement is described as part of a broader upgrade of FAB’s regional monitoring network, with equipment intended for strategic locations to improve geographic coverage, according to PhoneWorld’s October 2, 2026 report. The available PPRA record substantiates the Islamabad station award; it does not specify the number of other locations, a national deployment schedule or a completion date.

What equipment did FAB procure, and what is established about it?

Receivers and analyzers

The contract lists three digital RF receivers, also described as analyzers. Such equipment is part of the station’s capacity to observe radio-frequency activity, but the cited contract record does not give technical specifications such as supported frequency range or detailed analysis functions.

How could the upgrade help detect interference?

FAB manages radio-frequency allocation and monitoring. Its stated responsibilities include assigning frequencies and monitoring radio use to detect unauthorized wireless stations and interference among operators. Monitoring equipment gives the regulator tools to observe activity and investigate interference complaints or unauthorized use. FAB agency description

The award supports an intention to improve monitoring and detection capability. It does not show that the new station is operational, quantify how quickly it can locate a source, or demonstrate that interference has been reduced. Those outcomes would require operational evidence not provided in the contract record.

Why is this relevant to 5G planning?

Monitoring matters as Pakistan plans spectrum for future mobile services, including 5G or next-generation mobile services (NGMS). A government yearbook covering 2023–24 lists bands including 700, 1800, 2100, 2300, 2600 and 3500 MHz, as well as millimeter-wave ranges, in spectrum approved for future NGMS/5G auction planning. This is planning context: it is not proof that an auction has been completed or that current licenses have been assigned in those bands. Government yearbook, 2023–24

What do earlier monitoring figures show?

FAB’s historical workload provides context for why monitoring and interference response are ongoing regulatory tasks, but the figures below predate this contract and are not results of the new equipment.

What does a frequency assignment mean?

FAB’s official FAQ defines a frequency assignment as: “Authorization given by an administration for a radio station to use a radio frequency or radio frequency channel under specified conditions.” The definition describes the authorization framework that makes monitoring assigned and unauthorized use relevant; it is not a statement by a named official about this equipment award.
