Choose the search tool that matches what you remember

Use Everything for filename and folder searches
Everything is a focused option when you know some of a name but Windows Search is not surfacing the file. It indexes names rather than document text, so searching for a phrase that appears only inside a Word document or PDF is a different job. Voidtools says its FAQ that content searches run on demand and are slower than name searches.
Everything supports Windows 11. For NTFS volumes, its indexing requires either running its service or running the program with administrator privileges. Non-NTFS volumes and network shares may require separate configuration, so do not assume they will appear automatically. See the Everything FAQ for its current requirements and configuration details.
Make Windows Search include the right places and contents
Windows Search can find document words only when the relevant location is in scope and the file type is configured for content indexing. Microsoft’s indexing guide describes two scope choices: Classic indexes common user folders by default, while Enhanced covers the PC more broadly and may use more system resources. You can add locations rather than changing the whole indexing scope.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Search.
- Review whether Windows Search is set to Classic or Enhanced. If the missing file is outside the current scope, add its folder under the available location controls, or consider Enhanced if you need broader coverage.
- Check the file type’s indexing setting. For document text to be searchable, it must index both properties and file contents; properties-only indexing will not find words in the document body.

Use PowerToys Run if you want a launcher
PowerToys Run is a keyboard launcher, not an independent replacement for Windows indexing. Its Windows Search plugin returns files and folders covered by the Windows Search index. If a location is missing from that index, opening the search through PowerToys Run will not add it; fix Windows Search’s scope first. What to know about Microsoft’s newer Search Box
Microsoft announced Search Box improvements on July 13, 2026, with a gradual rollout to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel. That announcement does not establish general availability to all Windows users, and Microsoft says experiences vary by region.
