TechCrunch Disrupt 2026 will feature Clay co-founder and CEO Kareem Amin in a session about the emerging “GTM engineer” role: using data, AI and automation to build repeatable revenue workflows. The title reflects a category Clay says it helped create, not a settled industry-wide job definition. Here’s what the role means in practice, why it is drawing attention, and what the event announcement does—and does not—show.
What is a GTM engineer?
“GTM” means go-to-market: the work of finding potential customers, reaching them and helping move them toward a purchase. TechCrunch describes GTM engineering as turning parts of that work into systems built with data, AI and automation, rather than relying only on people to perform each task manually.
The announcement names several tasks that can be part of traditional go-to-market work:
- Researching target accounts
- Cleaning and organizing data
- Qualifying leads
- Preparing outreach
- Moving information between systems
A GTM engineer’s focus, in this description, is to connect and automate such tasks into repeatable workflows. That is a useful working explanation, not a universal job specification: responsibilities will depend on the company and its sales, marketing and technology setup.

- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
How the role changes the staffing question
TechCrunch frames the practical choice for founders and go-to-market leaders as whether to add people to execute an existing process or build systems that let the current team work differently. Automation does not, by itself, answer which approach is better. A team considering a workflow should still ask whether its data is reliable, where a person needs to review the output, and how it will measure results.
This distinction also separates GTM engineering from simply sending more outreach. The emphasis is on designing the process behind research, qualification and contact—not just completing those individual steps faster.

Why TechCrunch put GTM engineering on the Disrupt agenda
The session is titled “The GTM Engineer: How AI Created Tech’s Next Big Job Category.” TechCrunch’s agenda says it will examine how AI changed the traditional go-to-market stack and the discipline built around AI-native GTM. The agenda describes the session as tracing how AI “collapsed the traditional go-to-market stack”; that is event framing, rather than a direct quotation from Amin.
TechCrunch reports that Clay coined the role in 2023 and says Clay sees roughly 100 GTM-engineering job listings per month. Those are company-attributed claims reported by TechCrunch, not an independent count of the labor market. They help explain why the topic is being discussed, but do not establish how large or durable the occupation is.

Clay’s connection to the category
Amin leads Clay, a company that TechCrunch says began in Brooklyn in 2017 with a goal of making programming capabilities more accessible. Its original spreadsheet connected information and automated work without code. Salespeople, growth teams and agencies began using it for prospecting, and the company subsequently moved toward go-to-market workflows.
TechCrunch describes Clay’s current product as infrastructure for GTM teams to access data, run agentic workflows and launch campaigns. It also describes Claygent as an OpenAI-powered agent for research and outreach in sales, marketing and recruiting. These are descriptions of Clay’s product from TechCrunch, not independent evaluations of how well the tools perform.

Because Clay is both Amin’s company and a company associated with the role’s framing, its account is relevant but interested. Readers should distinguish Clay’s description of a category it says it helped build from evidence that the title has one consistent meaning across employers.

TechCrunch reported several figures from Clay in 2026. They indicate the company’s reported growth and investment activity, but do not independently measure demand for GTM engineers or establish the role’s long-term value.
