Object-Oriented Programming Explained: Classes, Objects, and Core Ideas

Object-oriented programming groups related state and behavior into objects. Learn how classes, encapsulation, inheritance, interfaces, and polymorphism work.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) organizes software around objects that combine related data and behavior. For example, a bicycle object might keep track of its gear and speed, and provide operations for changing gear or applying the brakes. A class defines the shared structure and behavior; individual bicycle objects are instances of that class, each with its own current values.

What are objects and classes?

An object bundles related state and behavior. In Java, fields hold state and methods expose behavior. A Bicycle class might define fields for cadence, speed, and gear, plus methods that change them. The class describes what its instances have in common; each instance holds its own values. Oracle’s class explanation uses this blueprint-and-instance model.

For instance, commuterBike and trailBike could both be instances of Bicycle. They share the class’s available fields and methods, but can have different speeds and gears. These names are illustrative, not a claim about a tested program.

What does encapsulation do?

Encapsulation keeps an object’s internal representation behind a controlled interface. Instead of allowing other code to edit a gear field arbitrarily, a bicycle object could expose a changeGear(...) method. That method gives the object a defined way to handle the change and can keep outside code from depending on how the gear is stored.

Languages differ in how they express and enforce visibility. Oracle’s Java tutorial describes controlling access to internal data through publicly exposed methods; that specific mechanism should not be assumed to work identically in every OOP language. Oracle’s tutorial answers discuss this idea.

How do inheritance and interfaces differ?

Inheritance specializes a class

Inheritance lets a class derive from another class, reusing or specializing inherited fields and methods. A general bicycle class could provide common features, while mountain, road, and tandem bicycle classes add or adapt details. This is useful when the relationship is genuinely “is a”: a mountain bicycle is a kind of bicycle.

Inheritance can also make behavior less obvious: a subclass may rely on state or methods that are defined in its superclass rather than visible in the subclass’s own source. Oracle advises documenting inherited behavior and state. In Java specifically, every class except Object has exactly one direct superclass. A subclass may override inherited methods, but constructors are not inherited. These are Java rules, not universal OOP rules. See Oracle’s inheritance overview and its Java inheritance explanation.

An interface defines a contract

An interface specifies behavior that a class agrees to provide, without requiring the class to inherit implementation from a particular parent. A Java bicycle interface could declare operations for changing cadence or gear; a class that implements it must provide the required methods for compilation to succeed. This makes an interface a contract or capability boundary: code can rely on the declared behavior without depending on one specific implementation. Syntax and features vary by language and version. Oracle’s interface tutorial gives the Java example.

What is polymorphism?

Polymorphism lets code use a shared type or abstraction while different concrete objects provide their own behavior. In Java, a subclass object can be used where its superclass is expected; an overridden method can then provide the subclass-specific behavior. A caller can work with a general bicycle type while different bicycle variants respond in their own way. Oracle’s Java tutorial explains polymorphism through related classes and distinct behavior.

How do these ideas fit together?

  • Class: defines shared structure and behavior.
  • Object: is one instance, with its own state.
  • Encapsulation: controls how other code interacts with internal details.
  • Inheritance: specializes a class and can reuse its implementation.
  • Interface: declares behavior that implementing classes promise to provide.
  • Polymorphism: lets code use a shared abstraction with different concrete implementations.

These ideas are related but not interchangeable. Inheritance is one way to share implementation; interfaces describe expected behavior, and composition—building an object from other objects—is another way to structure and reuse functionality.

When should you use OOP?

OOP is a design option, not a guarantee of easier or better software. It can be a natural fit when a program has entities whose state and behavior belong together, or when several variants need to satisfy a common abstraction. A language or application can also mix OOP with procedural or functional techniques.

Before choosing a design, ask:

  • Do the data and operations naturally belong together as objects?
  • Do multiple variants need distinct behavior through a shared abstraction?
  • Is the behavior being inherited genuinely common and likely to remain stable?
  • Would inheritance create dependencies that composition or another approach could avoid?
  • Will the design’s concepts be clear to the people who must learn and maintain it?

Those are practical design questions, not a universal ranking of programming styles. The Oracle Java Tutorials explain OOP concepts but do not establish that OOP is inherently faster, easier, or more maintainable than other approaches.

How does Java organize larger programs?

Java packages act as namespaces for organizing related classes and interfaces. They are useful context as a program grows, but they are separate from the core idea of objects combining state and behavior. See Oracle’s package explanation.

Are these concepts the same in every language?

No. OOP is a broad approach, and languages differ in their object models, visibility controls, inheritance rules, and interface features. The examples and the single-direct-superclass rule described here are Java-specific. Oracle labels its Java Tutorials as written for JDK 8 and notes that examples may not use features from later releases; it points readers to Dev.java for updated tutorials. The concepts remain useful, but check documentation for the language and version you are using. The tutorial’s overview is at Oracle’s OOP concepts page.
