How to Stop Your Breaker from Tripping: Safe Steps and When to Call an Electrician

Remove possible loads and reset a breaker once only if there are no danger signs. If it trips again or will not reset, leave it off and call an electrician.

If a breaker trips, switch off or unplug appliances on that circuit and reset the breaker once only if there are no signs of heat, burning, buzzing, crackling, smoke, water exposure, or damaged equipment. Move the handle fully to OFF, then back to ON. If it trips again, will not reset, or you are unsure what caused it, leave it off and call an electrician. A trip is a safety response—not a problem to defeat.

How to reset a tripped breaker safely

  1. Check for warning signs first. Do not approach the panel or affected equipment if you see smoke, burn marks, or water, or notice heat, buzzing, or crackling. Stop using the affected circuit and get professional help.
  2. Remove possible loads. If there are no warning signs, turn off or unplug appliances on the affected circuit.
  3. Identify the tripped breaker. Its handle may be in the OFF position or between ON and OFF.
  4. Reset it once. Move the handle fully to OFF, then back to ON.
  5. Stop if it trips again or will not reset. Leave it off and contact an electrician rather than trying repeated resets.

This is a limited reset procedure, not permission to repair the panel. Do not remove its cover, touch internal wiring, bypass the breaker, or install a higher-rated breaker. Breakers are safety devices that help prevent overloads and fires; oversized overcurrent protection can create a fire hazard. ESFI explains overcurrent protection, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes breaker safety.

Why does a breaker keep tripping?

A trip can point to several different problems. The trip alone does not tell you which one is present, and it is not enough to diagnose a defective breaker.

Overload

Too many or high-draw appliances on one circuit can overload it. Turning off or unplugging loads may allow a single reset, but recurring trips need assessment by an electrician; the circuit may require a different solution or additional capacity.

Short circuit or wiring fault

A damaged appliance, cord, receptacle, or fixed wiring can cause a trip. Do not open an appliance, receptacle, or wiring to investigate; have the fault diagnosed. ESFI’s electrical safety guidance covers these potential hazards.

Ground fault

A GFCI trips when it detects leakage current taking an unintended path. This protection matters especially where water and electricity may meet. Wet or faulty equipment can be involved; do not keep resetting a device when the cause is unclear. ESFI explains GFCI protection.

The durable carrying case keeps the tool and accessories organized, protected, and easy to transport, making it practical for professionals on the go and organized home users alike.

Arc fault

An AFCI is intended to detect arcing associated with damaged, overheated, or stressed wiring or devices. Treat an AFCI trip as a possible warning, not automatically as a nuisance event. ESFI explains AFCIs.

Defective protective device

A defective breaker or interrupter is one possible cause, but you cannot establish that from a trip alone. An electrician can inspect the device and circuit.

When to stop using the circuit and call for help

  • Heat, burn marks, buzzing, or crackling: Stop using the affected appliance or circuit if you can do so safely. Unplug an appliance only if reaching it does not bring you near a hazard. Contact an electrician or a qualified repair professional.
  • Repeated trips or failure to reset: Leave the breaker off and contact an electrician. There is no universally safe number of repeat trips to wait for.
  • Visible damage, water exposure, or uncertainty about the cause: Do not investigate inside equipment or the panel; get professional diagnosis.

GFCI and AFCI: what their tests can and cannot tell you

Testing a GFCI

ESFI describes this test sequence for a GFCI outlet or breaker: reset the device, verify power with a small load, press TEST and confirm the power shuts off, then reset it. If the test or reset does not work, ESFI says the GFCI should be replaced. If you are not qualified or confident about replacement, use an electrician. See ESFI’s GFCI guidance.

Testing an AFCI

ESFI recommends testing AFCIs monthly. If an AFCI fails its test, contact a licensed electrician for replacement. Do not disable AFCI or GFCI protection to stop trips. See ESFI’s AFCI guidance.

How the protective devices differ

Device What it responds to What a trip means for you
Standard breaker Overcurrent, including overload Reduce possible loads and reset once only if there are no danger signs; recurring trips need diagnosis.
GFCI Ground fault or leakage current Do not assume the cause is harmless; inspect for safe-to-address external conditions such as wet equipment, and seek help if it trips again.
AFCI Arc-fault conditions associated with fire risk Do not dismiss a trip as a nuisance or disable protection; arrange diagnosis if it recurs.

These devices have different purposes and are not interchangeable. Installing or substituting a protective device is not a replacement for finding the fault.

What frequent trips can indicate

In a 2025 ESFI survey of electrical contractors in Georgia and South Carolina, 37% of service calls involved tripped breakers or fuses. That is a survey finding about those contractors’ service calls, not an estimate of how many U.S. homes experience trips. For AFCI-related service calls in the survey, 84% were attributed to arc faults. ESFI also reported this breakdown of tripped breaker or fuse calls: standard breaker 38%, AFCI 24%, GFCI 19%, fuse 10%, and dual-function AFCI/GFCI breaker 9%. These figures describe the survey’s service-call mix, not all homes or all trips. Read ESFI’s 2025 findings.
