Yes—an old Pixel 4a can work well as an iPod-style player for local music: it has a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack and 128 GB of advertised internal storage. A 100 GB library can fit in principle, but the usable space is less than 128 GB after formatting and Android needs room for the system, apps and artwork. Check the phone’s free space before copying your collection.
Does the Pixel 4a have a headphone jack?
Yes. Google lists a standard 3.5 mm audio jack in the Pixel 4a specifications, so wired headphones or earbuds with a 3.5 mm plug connect directly. You do not need a USB-C dongle for them. The phone also supports Bluetooth 5.0 with A2DP for wireless headphones. Google’s Pixel 4a specifications.

Will 100 GB of music fit?
The Pixel 4a has 128 GB of advertised internal storage, but Google notes that its storage figures are measured before formatting. The space available to store music is therefore lower, and Android, preinstalled apps, your music player and downloaded artwork also use storage. A 100 GB collection may fit, but the advertised capacity alone does not guarantee it.
- Reset or clean up the phone if you want to maximize available space.
- Install the local music player you plan to use.
- Check available storage in Android settings, then copy your music library.
- Check free space again after the transfer and confirm the files appear in the player.
Track count depends on the files’ size and format; Google does not publish a guaranteed number of tracks for a 100 GB library.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
- The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
- Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]
What makes the Pixel 4a a practical music player?
- Direct wired listening: The built-in jack means compatible wired headphones work without an adapter.
- Room for a substantial library: Its 128 GB advertised capacity can accommodate a large collection if enough formatted space remains.
- Wireless option: Bluetooth 5.0 with A2DP supports Bluetooth audio.
- Local playback: You can install a music app and copy files to the phone rather than relying on streaming.
What should you check before relying on it?
Battery condition
Google lists a 3140 mAh battery and described it at launch as lasting all day. That launch statement is not a measured estimate of local-music playback time, particularly for a phone that has been in use since 2020. Check the battery’s current condition and test your own listening routine; no official source establishes continuous local-playback hours for the Pixel 4a.
Software and app support
The Pixel 4a launched with Android 10. Google’s specification says Pixel devices receive Android version updates for at least three years from their first availability on the Google Store in the United States. That stated minimum window is limited; check that the music player you choose still supports the Android version on your particular phone. Google’s Pixel 4a specifications.
Rank #2
- Network Support: Unlocked
How does it compare with a dedicated music player?
The Pixel 4a makes sense if you already own it and value a familiar phone-based way to manage local files. A dedicated player may suit you better if you want a device whose primary purpose is music. Decide based on these practical differences:
Quick Recap
- Storage: The Pixel’s advertised 128 GB is not all available for music; confirm formatted free space before transferring files.
- Headphones: Its 3.5 mm jack is convenient for wired listening, while Bluetooth is available if you prefer wireless headphones.
- Battery: The phone’s battery is an aging component, so its present condition matters more than the launch-day claim.
- Maintenance: The phone runs Android, but app compatibility depends on its installed software version.
