To restart Hulu, fully close the app—not just the show you’re watching—then open Hulu again. If it remains stuck, restart the device, check for Hulu and system updates, and then investigate cache or network issues. The exact controls vary by device, so use the steps below only where they match your platform.
1. Close Hulu completely, then reopen it
Exit the active stream and fully close Hulu, then launch the app again. Simply backing out of a program may leave the app running. Hulu recommends closing and reopening the app as a playback troubleshooting step in its Cloud DVR troubleshooting guidance; that guidance concerns playback problems and does not establish that every Hulu issue has the same cause.
On iPhone or iPad
Open the app switcher, dismiss Hulu, and then launch it again. Apple recommends force-closing and reopening an app that stops responding. App-switcher gestures vary by iPhone or iPad model and operating system, so follow Apple’s current instructions for your device if needed.
On a TV or other streaming device
Use the device’s own app controls to exit Hulu fully, if available, then reopen it. There is no verified universal force-close button or menu path for every smart TV, console, browser, or streaming-device model. Hulu’s supported-device article gives examples of platforms for add-on programming, but it is not a complete compatibility guarantee for every Hulu feature or version.

2. Restart the device if Hulu is still stuck
A device restart is broader than closing Hulu: it restarts the system as well as the app. Use the device’s normal restart controls rather than assuming that one remote-button sequence applies to every platform.
Roku
- Press Home, then go to Settings > System > Power > System restart.
- If there is no Power submenu, go to Settings > System > System restart.
Roku also documents unplugging the device for at least 10 seconds and reconnecting it as a system restart. Roku Support describes system restart as its least-invasive reset method and says it does not affect settings. See Roku’s restart instructions.

iPhone or iPad
If closing and reopening Hulu does not help, Apple recommends restarting the device when an app still stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or will not open. Restart steps differ by model; use Apple’s device-specific guidance instead of relying on a one-size-fits-all button sequence.
Other TVs and streaming platforms
Use the manufacturer’s support instructions for your model. Menus and app behavior vary, and Hulu’s update guidance illustrates that software controls differ across platforms; it does not provide a complete restart or force-close path for every device.

3. Check for Hulu and device updates
Hulu recommends checking both the app and device software for updates. Its update instructions, dated Aug. 28, 2026, give platform-specific examples: check app updates through the relevant app store, or check system updates in device settings. For Roku, the documented path is Settings > System > System Update > Check Now. Labels and availability can differ by model and software version.
4. Clear cache or app data only if your device offers the option
Hulu recommends clearing cache and data through device settings where that option is available. Cache consists of temporary files; clearing it may free space. The exact menu and the effect of clearing app data depend on the platform. Data clearing may reset local app state or sign you out, so read and confirm the device’s prompt before proceeding. This is an optional platform-specific step, not a universal first move.

If closing the app, restarting the device, updates, and connection checks do not resolve the issue, use Hulu’s streaming-issues contact page to find troubleshooting topics and support routes, including chat or phone where available. The Help Center reports live support 24 hours a day, seven days a week; confirm current availability on the contact page.

Restarting the app is not restarting a subscription
This guide is about getting the Hulu app responsive again. Hulu handles renewing a subscription after cancellation as a separate account and billing process, not as an app restart.
