Vibration can hold an object against a ceiling by creating a thin air film whose average pressure is lower than the surrounding air pressure. The atmosphere then presses the vibrating flexible disk toward the ceiling. This is a real adhesion mechanism demonstrated in research robots, but the published load figures are specific to their experimental hardware—not safe ratings for arbitrary household objects.
How vibration adhesion works
A small motor oscillates a flexible disk or sheet held very close to a rigid surface. The disk’s movement pumps air unevenly in the narrow gap: over a vibration cycle, more air is expelled from the gap than is drawn back in. The resulting average pressure in the gap falls below ambient pressure, so surrounding air pushes the disk toward the surface.
The gap acts as a thin gas film. The flexible element and its vibration create the pressure field; the effect does not require glue, a sealed suction cup, or a steady stream of externally supplied air. “Contact-free” describes the gas-film adhesion mechanism, not a promise that every part of a device will remain physically separated from the surface in every operating condition.
Is it the Bernoulli effect?
It is related to pressure differences, but it is not the same as a conventional Bernoulli gripper. A Bernoulli-style gripper generally uses steady airflow to create a pressure drop, whereas vibration adhesion relies on the oscillating flexible element to generate a low-pressure field inside a very small gap. Calling both effects “Bernoulli” obscures the important difference in how the pressure field is produced.

How much weight has it held?
Published demonstrations show substantial forces for small devices, but the results come from different apparatus and tests. They should not be treated as interchangeable ratings.
| Study and setup | Reported result | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Yuan et al. (2026): a 100 mm acoustic-adhesion disk with a 0.12 W vibration motor, tested against an inverted ceiling | Held a 360 g load; reported as 180 times the 2 g disk mass | A particular disk and motor held a load overhead. The 180× comparison is to disk mass, not the total device mass. |
| Weston-Dawkes et al. (2021): a mobile robot using a vibrating disk and drive wheels | Supported a measured load above 3.8 N | A load result for their robot configuration. |
| Weston-Dawkes et al. (2021): stationary system weighing roughly 14 g | Generated enough adhesion to support more than 35 times its own weight | A stationary test result, distinct from the mobile robot’s measured-load result. |
| Tricarico, Shiferaw and Papangelo (2026): vibrating PDMS-glass soft contacts | Maximum pull-off-force enhancement close to 13-fold | An increase relative to the tested non-activated condition; it is not a ceiling payload rating. |
These are laboratory or prototype results, not a universal household ceiling-load limit. The cited studies do not establish a consumer safety rating for attaching arbitrary objects overhead using vibration adhesion.

What determines whether it holds?
The mechanism is sensitive to the geometry and operating conditions of the whole assembly. A flexible disk must vibrate effectively, while the opposing surface needs to be sufficiently rigid. The air gap is especially important: changes in spacing can alter the pressure field and reduce adhesion.
- Disk size and stiffness: Radius, material, and thickness affect bending stiffness and the pressure generated. A larger disk may increase total force while reducing adhesive pressure.
- Actuator and vibration: Motor type, frequency, and amplitude determine how the disk moves. A motor operating outside its effective frequency range may not maintain adhesion.
- Surface and gap: Substrate rigidity and stable, close spacing matter. A change in the gap can weaken the air-film effect.
- Load direction and geometry: Strong normal adhesion can coexist with low resistance to sideways motion. Peeling moments or curved-surface loads can make detachment more likely.
- Power and heat: More drive is not automatically better. In Weston-Dawkes et al.’s 2021 experiments, continuous operation above the motor’s rated power caused overheating.
Why can it stick yet still slide?
The air film can provide strong force pulling the device toward the surface while offering relatively little resistance to movement parallel to it. That combination is useful for a robot: the adhesive element can keep the chassis against a wall or ceiling while wheels provide motion. In a climbing design, however, wheel preload and chassis constraints affect whether the disk maintains its working gap. In the 2021 experiments, wheel preload influenced adhesion, and increasing it to help vertical climbing could reduce payload when inverted.

What a prototype uses—and what the studies do not specify
A basic research-style concept pairs a flexible disk with a vibration actuator. Weston-Dawkes et al. used flexible polyester shim stock, selecting disk thickness and radius to tune bending stiffness. They used eccentric rotating-mass (ERM) motors for broad experiments and linear resonant actuators (LRAs) when single-axis frequency control was needed.
For a maker project, those descriptions suggest component categories rather than a guaranteed recipe: a coin-style ERM motor, an LRA where controlled single-axis excitation is useful, and flexible polyester or plastic shim stock for a disk. The right combination depends on the disk, motor output, vibration settings, gap, and substrate. The cited information does not give a universal frequency, amplitude, or disk specification that will make any chosen load safe overhead, so a parts list alone cannot establish a ceiling-load capacity.

Could a robot climb walls or ceilings?
Yes. Weston-Dawkes et al. (2021) demonstrated a mobile robot using vibration adhesion, and Yuan et al. (2026) demonstrated an acoustic-adhesion robot traversing vertical and inverted surfaces with inspection-oriented navigation. These prototypes show why the technique is of interest for wall- and ceiling-inspection robotics: it can combine normal attachment with comparatively low resistance to tangential movement.
That capability does not make detachment impossible. Air-gap changes, a surface that is not sufficiently rigid, peeling loads, loss of wheel preload or contact, overheating, and operation outside an actuator’s effective range can all undermine attachment. Those failure modes matter particularly overhead, where a device falling can cause damage or injury.
