If you want to know how long a phone battery will last, check its endurance in cycles to 80% capacity—and, for a phone you already own, its current battery health. A capacity figure in mAh tells you how much charge the battery is rated to hold when new; it does not tell you how many years it will remain useful or how many hours a charge will last.
Which smartphone battery specification matters most?
For battery longevity, look for battery endurance in cycles: how many charge-and-discharge cycles a battery can withstand before its usable capacity falls to 80% of its rated capacity. The European Union defines this measure in its smartphone ecodesign rules. A higher figure indicates a battery designed to retain more of its capacity over more full-equivalent cycles, but it is not a promise of identical results for every owner.
That is different from endurance per cycle, which is a runtime measure: how long a fully charged phone runs a defined test scenario before shutting down. EU Regulation 2023/1669 requires smartphone energy labels from 20 June 2025 and includes both measures. Read the EU regulation.
Battery capacity, runtime and cycle endurance are not interchangeable
| Measure | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Rated capacity (mAh) | The battery’s declared capacity when new. | How many hours the phone lasts in a defined test, or how many cycles it will take to reach 80% capacity. |
| Endurance per cycle (hours) | Runtime in a specified test scenario from a full charge until automatic shutoff. | Your exact everyday runtime, which varies with use and conditions. |
| Endurance in cycles | How many cycles the battery is designed to withstand before reaching 80% of rated capacity. | A guaranteed lifespan or a precise replacement date for an individual phone. |
| Current battery health | The operating system’s indication of the battery’s present capacity or condition. | The phone’s original rated capacity or a universal replacement threshold. |
EU registry listings illustrate why mAh alone is incomplete. A Google phone listing accessed in 2026 reports 5,000 mAh, 52 hours 19 minutes of endurance per cycle and 1,000 cycles. An OPPO listing accessed in 2026 reports 5,950 mAh, 63 hours 18 minutes per cycle and 1,600 cycles. These are separate registry values, not a direct guarantee of how long either phone will last in a particular person’s hands. Search smartphone energy labels in the EU registry.

How many charge cycles should a phone battery last?
There is no single cycle-life figure for every phone. Apple’s current service guidance says iPhone 14 and earlier models are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles; for iPhone 15 and later, the stated target is 80% after 1,000 complete cycles. These are Apple’s model-group design targets, not guarantees that every battery reaches the threshold at exactly that point. Apple: iPhone battery and performance.
A cycle does not mean one uninterrupted charge from 0% to 100%. Apple explains: “You complete one charge cycle when you’ve used an amount that represents 100 percent of your battery’s capacity.” For example, using 60% one day and 40% the next adds up to one cycle. Apple: Lithium-ion batteries.
Which phone battery lasts the longest?
For a purchase comparison, separate runtime per charge from long-term durability. If EU energy-label data is available for both phones, compare endurance per cycle in hours to compare results under the defined test, then compare cycle endurance to 80% to assess the stated durability target. Use mAh as context rather than a verdict: a larger rated capacity alone does not establish longer tested runtime or longer cycle life.

Also consider whether the battery’s current health can be checked easily and whether service or replacement is practical for that model. Lab-style defined scenarios help make comparisons more consistent, but real-world runtime and aging vary with temperature, workload, charging habits, software and battery variation.

Samsung Galaxy
On supported Galaxy phones running One UI 6.1, go to Settings > Battery > Battery protection and choose Maximum to stop charging at 80%. This is a charging limit, not a battery-health reading; availability varies by model and software. Samsung: Protect your Galaxy battery.
Does charging to 80% help?
An 80% charging limit can reduce the time a phone spends fully charged, but the setting and its behavior differ by phone. Samsung’s Maximum mode on supported One UI 6.1 devices stops charging at 80%; Google’s Battery Health Assistance adjusts charging as the battery changes. Such features can support battery care, but they do not remove the effects of heat, workload, software or normal aging, and they do not guarantee a particular cycle count.
When should you replace a phone battery?
Use the phone’s battery-health status and the manufacturer’s service advice rather than applying one percentage threshold to every brand. A phone that reports reduced health, recommends service, or increasingly needs charging may warrant assessment. If you replace it, confirm the service option or any replacement part is explicitly compatible with your exact phone model; cycle figures alone cannot diagnose a worn battery.
