According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is developing a home security camera that would monitor its surroundings with AI but would not give owners video footage to review. Apple has not announced the camera, so its features—and what it could detect or show instead—remain unconfirmed.
Will Apple’s smart home camera record video?
Not according to Gurman’s reported description. MacRumors reported on October 1, 2026, that Gurman said on his Power On podcast the camera would have “no video recording.” MacRumors also quoted him describing it as “the first mainstream video camera that’s a home video security camera that doesn’t give you any footage.” MacRumors’s report attributes the claim to Gurman; it is not a confirmed Apple specification.
A September 4 report from MacRumors, citing Bloomberg, described a privacy-focused camera that would “use AI to monitor the surrounding environment instead of actual video footage.” 9to5Mac reproduced Bloomberg’s description of an in-home security sensor and automation device tied to a new home security and monitoring service. MacRumors’s earlier report and 9to5Mac’s account do not explain how that monitoring would work in practice.
There is no confirmed feature list in those reports. They do not establish whether the device could provide live viewing, still images, text summaries, alerts, or any other output. Nor do they say where analysis would happen, whether anything would be stored, or what the service’s terms would be.

It also supports Lens Obstruction Detection, custom audio files, and 2-way audio (Notes: Only in Aqara Home App).
- HomeKit Support & Wide Compatibility: The Aqara G100 Camera provides full support for HomeKit Secure Video (Note:Requires an active iCloud subscription and an Apple Home hub. HomeKit limits resolution to 1080p. When connected to both Apple and Aqara Home, the G100’s resolution in Aqara Home will also be limited to 1080p, but will return to 1296p if HomeKit is disconnected.) The G100 has some of the best third-party ecosystem support on the market, it can stream to Google, Alexa compatible smart displays, and even Home Assistant via the RTSP protocol, making it easier to interact with visitors or check in on loved ones.
- Flexible Storage Methods: Record 24/7 with a microSD (up to 512GB, not included) or NAS. Time-lapse mode compresses 24-hours of footage to 15-second clips (wired connection and microSD card required). Automatically store detected events with end-to-end encryption in the cloud with a HomeGuardian subscription, ensuring protection against data theft and guaranteeing your privacy at home.
Can a security camera help if it does not save footage?
It could still be useful for sensing activity or triggering smart-home automations, depending on what Apple ultimately builds. But detection and documentation are different jobs: a device that identifies an event without saving viewable footage may tell you that something happened without giving you a recording to inspect afterward.
That distinction matters if you need evidence of a break-in, a way to review what happened while you were away, or video to share with someone else. Until Apple confirms the device’s outputs, it is not possible to know whether the rumored camera would meet those needs. The phrase “doesn’t record video” also does not, by itself, settle whether it might provide some other kind of record.

How does the rumor compare with Apple Home today?
Apple’s current Home ecosystem includes camera features that are oriented around viewing footage. Apple says the Home app can show up to four cameras at once, and that a HomePod, HomePod mini, or Apple TV can be configured as a home hub. Apple also describes HomeKit Secure Video as a way to monitor activity privately. Apple’s Home app page says Home data is stored so Apple cannot read it and describes communications as end-to-end encrypted.
Those are descriptions of existing Home features, not specifications for the rumored camera or its reported monitoring service. Do not assume the new device would inherit the same recording, storage, privacy, or encryption arrangements.
