For a conventional home-phone replacement, Ooma Telo with Ooma Basic is the best value-oriented choice. Basic has no stated monthly service charge before taxes and fees, supports number porting, works with a dedicated handset through the Telo adapter, and includes address-based 911. Choose Vonage for Home if international calling and a larger feature set matter more. Choose Google Voice if everyone is comfortable using an app or browser—and select a paid tier if the household needs 911.
The right answer depends on whether you want a plug-in home phone, international service, or an app-first number. Your total cost also includes hardware, taxes, regulatory fees, broadband and a plan’s emergency-calling limits.

What Basic includes
- $0 stated monthly service cost before taxes and fees.
- Unlimited calling within the United States, subject to Ooma’s current service terms.
- Number transfer (porting) for a one-time fee, so you can usually keep an existing home number if it is eligible.
- Mobile-app calling in addition to the handset connected to the Telo.
- Address-based 911, which depends on registering and maintaining the correct service address.
When Premier is worth the extra $9.99
Premier adds advanced call blocking, a second line and enhanced voicemail. Those features make sense for a busy household, a separate home-office line or anyone who needs stronger spam control. If you only need one number and ordinary voicemail, Basic is the lower-cost starting point.
Ooma’s costs beyond the advertised $0
The free-service figure does not mean the complete setup costs nothing. You still need Telo hardware, broadband and any taxes or regulatory fees. Editorial comparisons have put Telo hardware near $99.99, but that is an estimate that can change with promotions, seller, stock and location. Check the current equipment price and checkout total before ordering.

Choose Vonage for Home when international calling is the priority
Vonage’s residential service is the better direction when a household regularly calls outside the United States and wants a larger set of calling controls. Its home site advertises plan choices and more than 25 features; review coverage describes North America and World Prime options. The exact destinations, included minutes and price depend on the plan available to your address.
Emergency calling and location requirements
Vonage requires a registered physical location for emergency calling. Update that location whenever the adapter moves; an unregistered or outdated address can send responders to the wrong place or prevent the call from being handled as expected.

Questions to answer before ordering
- Does the current plan include the countries you call, or are calls billed separately?
- Are taxes, regulatory recovery fees, equipment and activation included in the advertised price?
- Is the offer available at your address, and is there a contract or early-termination condition?
- Which phones and wiring setups are supported?
Use Google Voice when an app is your home phone
Google Voice is the simplest fit for a household that does not need a dedicated desk handset. Calls can be handled through supported mobile apps and a browser, so there is no requirement for an Ooma-style adapter. That convenience comes with a different household experience: every user needs a compatible device, reliable internet and access to the account.
Pick the tier based on 911 needs
- Free: Google lists a free standalone tier, but its comparison shows no 911 support.
- Starter: Listed at $10 per month, with 911 support shown in Google’s comparison.
- Standard: Listed at $20 per month, also with 911 support shown in the comparison.
If the number may be used for a medical, security or other safety-critical call, do not select the free tier as your only emergency option. Confirm eligibility, address registration and current terms in Google Voice before moving a primary household number.

What to check before replacing a landline
Broadband and power
Every internet-based phone service depends on a working broadband connection. A provider’s adapter or your Wi-Fi equipment also needs power, so a household phone can stop working during an internet outage or power failure. Ask the provider what backup, battery or outage support is available, and keep a charged mobile phone or another emergency option if the line is safety-critical.
Number porting
Porting rules depend on the number’s current carrier, address and service type. Ooma advertises number transfer for a one-time fee; other providers may have different fees, timelines or eligibility checks. Do not cancel the old service until the new provider confirms the port is complete.

- Ooma has been rated the top phone service by Consumer Reports.
- Built-in wireless connectivity to place your Ooma Telo anywhere in your home. Works only in the US.
- Crystal-clear nationwide calling for free and low international rates. Pay only monthly applicable taxes and fees.
- Take your home phone on the go with the easy-to-use Ooma Home Phone mobile app
- Includes unlimited calling in the US, voicemail, caller-ID, call-waiting, 911 calling and text alerts.
Handset and in-home wiring
A Telo-based service is designed for a conventional telephone connected to the adapter. App-first services are better for mobiles, tablets and browsers. If you want to feed an entire home’s existing phone wiring, ask the provider and an installer whether that wiring can be safely isolated from the old telephone network before connecting it.
Taxes, fees and geography
Advertised prices are not the same as a final bill. Add equipment, 911 or regulatory charges, sales tax and any international overage. Emergency-calling availability and plan pricing can also vary by country, state or address. Recheck the provider’s checkout page and emergency-service terms on the day you order.
Quick Recap
How to choose in five minutes
- Need a normal home handset? Start with Ooma Telo and compare Basic with Premier.
- Call other countries frequently? Compare the current Vonage for Home destinations and total monthly fees against your calling pattern.
- Prefer phones and computers over a desk set? Consider Google Voice; choose Starter or Standard when 911 support is required.
- Need to keep your number? Verify port eligibility and the one-time charge before cancelling the old line.
- Is the phone safety-critical? Confirm address-based 911, broadband and power-outage behavior, then retain a backup way to call emergency services.
Bottom line by household type
- Most households replacing a landline: Ooma Basic with a Telo is the strongest value starting point.
- Households with heavy international calling: Vonage for Home deserves the first comparison, but check the current country list and emergency-location rules.
- Mobile- and browser-first households: Google Voice is the most natural fit; the free tier is not a substitute for a service with 911.
- Anyone comparing a fourth option: 1-VoIP’s residential tiers may be worth checking, especially if its current World Unlimited country list matches your calls.
