WebP stores frames, frame delays and repeat behavior. A pause or play control must be implemented by the web page, and the method depends on how the animation is rendered. If the file is simply loaded with an <img> element, there is no universal browser API that exposes its playback timeline.
What an animated WebP controls
WebP is a RIFF-based image format that supports lossy and lossless images, transparency and animation. An animated file uses animation data in addition to its image data. The WebP specification describes animation as being controlled by ANIM and ANMF chunks.
ANIM: stores global parameters such as the background color and loop count.ANMF: stores the individual frames in display order, including their timing and image data.- Frame duration: is represented in milliseconds. Zero or very short durations can be interpreted specially by implementations.
The loop count is file behavior, not an interactive user control. A loop count of zero means repeat indefinitely. A nonzero value is interpreted as the stored count minus one, according to the format specification.
Why changing loop metadata does not create a pause button
Editing the loop count can make an animation play once or repeat, but it cannot let a viewer pause and resume it at an arbitrary frame. The file tells a decoder how to reconstruct and repeat the animation; it does not define a user-facing play, pause or stop interface.

How to provide a real pause control
First decide whether the page is displaying the WebP as an ordinary image or rendering its frames through a controllable animation system. Then design the control around that rendering method.
When the page uses an ordinary image
An animated WebP loaded as an image does not, through the cited Web Animations API documentation, expose a universal pause method. Animation.pause() pauses an Animation object created for the Web Animations API; it should not be presented as a general way to pause every animated WebP in an <img>.

If you need dependable play, pause, resume or stop behavior, use a rendering approach whose timeline your application can control rather than assuming that an image element supplies one. Select the approach for your target browsers, keyboard and screen-reader behavior, and performance requirements, then test it in those browsers. There is no single browser-independent recipe established here for an ordinary animated WebP image.
When you only need a different repeat policy
Change the WebP’s animation metadata with an appropriate WebP authoring or muxing tool. This can produce a finite animation instead of an infinite one, but it still will not give users an interactive pause and play button.

Controls the interface should expose
- A clearly labelled Pause control while motion is running.
- A Play or Resume control after pausing.
- A Stop or Hide option when ending or removing the motion is useful.
- Keyboard access, a visible focus indicator and an accessible name for each control.
- A state update that tells assistive technology whether the animation is playing or paused.
When accessibility rules call for a control
WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.2.2 applies to moving, blinking, scrolling or auto-updating information that:
- starts automatically,
- lasts more than five seconds, and
- is presented in parallel with other content.
For qualifying content, the criterion requires a mechanism to pause, stop or hide the motion, or to control its frequency, unless an exception applies—for example, when the movement is essential to an activity. Read the full criterion before making a compliance claim; not every animated image meets all of these conditions.

As practical guidance, give people who have indicated a reduced-motion preference control over animation, including dedicated play and pause controls. Treat this implementation guidance separately from the exact normative conditions in WCAG.
A practical decision checklist
- Need only finite repetition? Set the WebP loop metadata and verify the resulting count in the target viewers.
- Need user pause and resume? Do not rely on the file’s loop count or assume an
<img>element has a controllable timeline. Choose a rendering method designed for application-controlled playback. - Motion starts automatically beside other content? Check the three WCAG conditions and applicable exceptions, then provide the required mechanism.
- Users may prefer less motion? Detect the reduced-motion preference and offer an easy way to keep the animation paused or otherwise reduce motion.
- Changing tools or browsers? Test loading, timing, looping, keyboard operation and assistive-technology announcements in every supported environment.
What WebP tools can and cannot do
Google’s WebP tooling, including libwebp and its cwebp and dwebp utilities, supports creating and converting WebP images. Related viewing, muxing and animation tools can help author or inspect an animated file. These tools change or examine the asset; they do not automatically add a pause interface to a web page.

Bottom line
Use WebP metadata to control whether an animation repeats. Use page-level controls and a controllable rendering method to let people pause, resume, stop or hide it. The Web Animations API’s Animation.pause() method is not, by itself, a universal pause control for an animated WebP displayed as an ordinary image.
