Its 50MP telephoto camera provides 5× optical zoom, while the separate 3× optical telephoto camera has a 10MP sensor. Samsung’s US support documentation and Samsung Mobile Press specifications list these as two different camera modules.
The S24 Ultra’s two telephoto cameras
| Camera | Sensor resolution | Optical zoom | Aperture | Field of view | Stabilization |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Telephoto | 10MP | 3× | F2.4 | 36° | OIS |
| Telephoto | 50MP | 5× | F3.4 | 22° | OIS |
These figures are Samsung’s published specifications for the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The 3× module’s wider 36° field of view and brighter F2.4 aperture suit closer telephoto framing and lower-light scenes. The 5× module has the narrower 22° view expected from a longer lens and uses a much higher-resolution sensor.
What “3×” and “5×” mean in practice
Dedicated optical zoom
Samsung says the phone uses dedicated optical lenses at 3× and 5×. At those settings, the camera app can select the corresponding telephoto module rather than creating the entire image by digitally enlarging a main-camera frame.
Intermediate and extended zoom settings
The S24 Ultra also presents 2× and 10× results as “optical quality.” That label does not mean the phone contains a dedicated optical lens at every zoom step. Samsung describes these results as combining high-resolution sensor readout with image processing.

How Samsung describes 10× optical-quality zoom
For its 10× explanation, Samsung says a 50MP image captured through the 5× telephoto camera can be reduced to 12MP. The company also cites AI super-resolution and multi-frame processing. This is Samsung’s description of the imaging pipeline, not an independent laboratory measurement of 10× image quality.
The distinction matters: 5× is the module’s stated optical magnification, whereas 10× optical-quality output is a computational result built from the 5× camera’s sensor data and processing.

When Space Zoom takes over
Samsung’s support guide says Space Zoom engages automatically after 5× in PHOTO or VIDEO mode. Available zoom choices can change with the selected resolution and camera mode, so the controls shown on screen may not be identical in every shooting setup.
- Open the Camera app and choose PHOTO or VIDEO.
- Move beyond the 5× zoom point.
- Let the phone apply Space Zoom processing; the available magnifications depend on the current mode and resolution.
Does more megapixels make the 5× camera better?
The 50MP sensor gives the 5× camera more image data than the 10MP 3× module, but megapixel count alone does not establish overall image quality. Aperture, field of view, stabilization, lighting, focus, and Samsung’s processing all affect the final frame. The published material does not provide controlled independent tests comparing the two cameras.

Samsung additionally describes the 50MP sensor as twice the size of previous models and its pixels as 60% larger. Those are manufacturer comparisons; the cited specification does not state the numeric sensor-area baseline or identify the exact previous model used for that comparison.

Choose 3× for nearer subjects
Use the 3× setting when you need a moderate telephoto view, such as portraits, nearby details, or scenes where the subject would be too tightly framed at 5×. Its F2.4 aperture is also wider than the 5× camera’s F3.4 specification.

Choose 5× for distant subjects
Use 5× when the subject is farther away and you want the phone’s dedicated long telephoto lens. Both telephoto cameras include OIS, which helps reduce hand movement, although stabilization cannot freeze a moving subject.
Use 10× when framing requires it
At 10×, expect the phone to rely on the optical-quality computational pipeline Samsung describes rather than a separate 10× lens. Results can vary with light, movement, detail, and the selected camera mode.
