Academy Software Foundation Report: What the 2022 Open Source in Entertainment Study Says

The 2022 Academy Software Foundation report explains why entertainment companies share open-source infrastructure, tracing ASWF's origins, projects and neutral-governance model while distinguishing its historical figures from current facts.

The Open Source in Entertainment: How the Academy Software Foundation Creates Shared Value report is a 45-page historical overview published in March 2022 by the Academy Software Foundation (ASWF) with Linux Foundation Research. It explains why film, animation, visual-effects and technology companies collaborate on open-source production software, how ASWF was formed, and what its projects looked like in the foundation’s first years. Its figures describe the foundation around 2022, not its current portfolio.

What is the Academy Software Foundation?

ASWF is a neutral organizational home for open-source software used in media and entertainment production. Its stated mission is to increase the quality and quantity of contributions to content-creation open-source software, coordinate work across projects, provide shared build and test infrastructure, and give individuals and organizations a way to participate. ASWF says participation can include technical and non-technical contributions.

The report’s central argument is that companies can compete commercially while facing many of the same engineering problems. A neutral foundation lets studios, vendors and individual developers improve reusable components together instead of maintaining separate, incompatible implementations. The report presents this as an organizational rationale and a set of participant perspectives, not as a measured industry-wide impact study.

Neutral governance versus company ownership

Projects maintained inside one company can be valuable, but other organizations may hesitate to depend on a single vendor’s priorities or licensing decisions. ASWF is intended to provide shared governance and a place to discuss road maps, standards, infrastructure and contribution rules across organizational boundaries.

Participation is different from funding

The report’s foreword says individuals can join the open-source community without cost. Companies that want to fund foundation activity are directed to ASWF’s corporate-membership information. These are separate roles: contributing code, documentation, testing or discussion does not by itself mean becoming a paying member.

What does the Academy Software Foundation report say?

David Morin, then ASWF executive director, describes the foundation as “a neutral place, a common ground, where studios and vendors could come together to write open source software that would benefit everyone.” The report traces that idea to cooperation that existed before ASWF’s launch, including Linux adoption, shared production technology and efforts to align software versions across facilities.

ASWF officially launched in July 2018. The report describes the VFX Reference Platform as an effort to align important library and tool versions so that software developed by different studios and vendors is easier to build, deploy and exchange.

The report’s dated project snapshot

In the clearest aggregate figure in the report, ASWF had adopted 10 open-source projects in fewer than four years: four had graduated and six were in incubation. That is a March 2022 report figure. It should not be read as ASWF’s current project count or as proof that every project listed then still has the same governance status.

Why do film and visual-effects studios share open-source software?

Modern production pipelines move images, color information, geometry, volumetric simulations, timelines and shading data among many applications and facilities. Common formats and reference implementations reduce the need for every company to solve the same interoperability problem privately.

  • Interoperability: Shared formats let tools from different vendors exchange data with fewer custom translators.
  • Shared maintenance: Multiple organizations can review, test and improve infrastructure that none of them would want to own alone.
  • Standards with working code: A reference implementation makes an abstract specification testable in production.
  • Lower duplication: Companies can direct more engineering effort to differentiated tools rather than rebuilding common plumbing.

The report does not quantify the savings, reliability gains or productivity effects of these benefits. Its evidence is the foundation’s history, project descriptions and interviews with industry participants.

Which open-source projects does the report highlight?

The examples operate at different layers of a production pipeline; they are complementary tools, not competing products in a single shortlist.

Project Production task History described in the report
OpenEXR High-dynamic-range image data and image interchange Released by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and later used broadly across production workflows.
OpenColorIO Color management Released by Sony Pictures Imageworks to help facilities manage consistent color transforms.
OpenVDB Volumetric data and simulation Originated at DreamWorks as VDB and was later open-sourced as OpenVDB.
OpenCue Render-farm and production scheduling infrastructure Listed in the report’s project timeline.
OpenTimelineIO Timeline interchange Listed among projects in the foundation’s early development history.
Open Shading Language Shading-language infrastructure Included in the report’s timeline of projects connected with the foundation’s ecosystem.
MaterialX Material and look-development interchange Included in the report’s timeline and project discussion.

Because the report is historical, consult each project’s official current documentation for present releases, maintainers and governance. The report should not be used as a current version guide.

What do industry participants say?

The report includes interview-style statements that illustrate how participants view the foundation. They are perspectives published in a foundation-sponsored report, not independent measurements.

  • Carol Payne, imaging technologist at Netflix, calls ASWF a place where companies can “collaborate, communicate common goals, and see connections we wouldn’t have seen before.”
  • Kimball Thurston, distinguished engineer at Weta Digital, describes a neutral forum for developing open standards with reference implementations and media-production tools.
  • Steve May, chief technology officer at Pixar Animation Studios, says the foundation provides critical support for projects on which the industry relies.
  • Rob Bredow of ILM notes that the industry’s need to share across vendors is built partly on open-source software.

How to read the report today

Useful as a history and primer

The report is valuable for understanding why ASWF was created, how earlier studio projects led toward foundation governance, and how common infrastructure fits into entertainment pipelines.

Not a current annual report

It does not establish ASWF’s 2026 project total, current graduation status, present membership terms or the latest release of any named project. Those details can change and should be checked on ASWF and the individual project websites.

Not an impact benchmark

The report contains no representative survey result or single industry-wide statistic measuring the financial or operational effect of open source. The “10 projects” statement is a portfolio snapshot, not an outcome metric.

Who should use the report?

  • Pipeline and infrastructure engineers: to understand the rationale for shared formats, libraries and reference implementations.
  • Studio and vendor leaders: to evaluate neutral governance as an alternative to duplicating common infrastructure internally.
  • Researchers and students: as a case study in how open-source foundations organize collaboration among competitors.
  • Potential contributors: as an introduction to the kinds of technical and non-technical participation ASWF supports.
