The EON XBHD is a plug-and-play way to connect an original Xbox to modern displays over HDMI. It requires no internal console modification or external power, supports 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i, and adds two HD outputs, optical-audio support and three Ethernet ports for linked-system play. Its appeal is convenience rather than maximum image quality: independent reviews found it sharper than legacy AV connections but softer than a strong upscaler or internal HDMI modification, with some loss of detail in dark games.
What the EON XBHD is—and which Xbox it fits
The XBHD is an adapter for the original Microsoft Xbox, not Xbox 360, Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles. ZedLabz states that all original Xbox revisions and regions are supported, including NTSC and PAL systems. EON’s Spartan Edition product information likewise limits compatibility to original Xbox consoles.
It sits at the rear of the console and converts the Xbox’s component-video signal to HD output. Because processing occurs in the adapter, you do not need to open the console, install a mod board or provide a separate power brick.
How to connect an original Xbox to HDMI with XBHD
- Turn off the Xbox and disconnect its existing AV cable.
- Attach the XBHD to the original Xbox’s rear video connector, seating it fully.
- Connect one of the adapter’s HD outputs to your television or monitor with a suitable HDMI cable.
- For recording, connect the second HD output to a capture card while the first feeds the main display. Time Extension specifically found this dual-output arrangement useful.
- Switch the display to the connected HDMI input and start the Xbox. The adapter requires no external power supply.
- If you use optical audio, connect a compatible cable to the XBHD’s 3.5 mm MiniTOSLINK port and configure the receiving equipment for optical input.
The adapter passes the Xbox’s supported video modes rather than creating modern 4K output. The listed modes are 480i, 480p, 720p and 1080i; the resolution available in practice also depends on the game and the console’s video settings.

Video quality: a cleaner connection, not a 4K upgrade
XBHD output is generally a substantial convenience improvement over an old composite or legacy AV connection, especially on televisions that no longer accept those inputs. However, it should not be treated as an image-quality replacement for every enthusiast setup.
What reviews found
- Time Extension’s Damien McFerran reported a sharper picture than legacy AV, but less sharpness than an internal HDMI modification or a quality upscaler. He also noted reports of dark imagery and did not notice sluggish controller response during testing.
- GamesRadar+ described the adapter as convenient but imperfect, reporting loss of detail in dark games. Its testing covered PAL and NTSC consoles and games including Soul Calibur 2, Doom 3, Halo and Knights of the Old Republic.
Original Xbox software often renders below the adapter’s maximum output modes, so selecting 1080i does not make every game a native 1080i title. If your priority is the cleanest possible scaling, an internal HDMI solution or a dedicated external upscaler may be preferable; those options generally involve more equipment, installation or both.

- [YPbPr Signal Output] Convert YPbPr component signals of Original Xbox console to HDMI signals, and then transmit them to modern HDTVs and monitors through HDMI cable, without any delay.
- [Clear Image] Use YPbPr component signal conversion and transmission to provide the best image colors and details. (Transfer only, can't improve the video quality.)
- [Plug and Play] This adapter does not require external power supply, just connect the adapter and HDMI cable (Note: Without HDMI cable), and it is ready to use.
Outputs, audio and Xbox LAN features
Two HD outputs
The two HD ports can feed two displays, or a television and a capture device at the same time. This is the XBHD’s most distinctive feature for streamers and people who want to record gameplay without repeatedly changing cables.
Optical audio
The 3.5 mm MiniTOSLINK connection provides optical-audio connectivity. You will need a compatible MiniTOSLINK cable or adapter and an optical input on the receiving device.

Three additional Ethernet ports
The adapter expands the Xbox’s single network connection with three RJ45 LAN ports. EON and retailer specifications describe linked play involving up to four systems without a separate router. Each participating Xbox still needs its own Ethernet cable and compatible system-link game setup.
This is a wired LAN expansion, not a replacement for broadband matchmaking or a wireless network. It is most useful when several original Xbox consoles are arranged together for a local session.

XBHD versus other ways to modernize Xbox video
The right choice depends on whether you value installation-free setup, image processing, or the lowest total cost. The following comparison uses only capabilities established for the XBHD; details for alternative setups vary by model and are not stated in the cited product material.
| Option | Installation and power | Video and outputs | Extra features | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| EON XBHD | Plug-and-play; no console modification or external power | 480i/480p/720p/1080i; two HD outputs | Three LAN ports and MiniTOSLINK optical audio | Owners wanting a simple HDMI connection, capture output and wired LAN expansion |
| Internal HDMI modification | Requires opening and modifying the console; power and installation method depend on the mod | Specific resolutions, scaling and output count are not stated in the supplied product evidence | LAN and optical-audio features are not established here | Users willing to modify the Xbox for potentially sharper video |
| OSSC or RetroTINK setup | Requires an external scaler and associated cabling; power requirements depend on the model | Processing features and output count vary by device and are not stated here | Does not inherently provide the XBHD’s three-port LAN expansion | Users prioritizing external scaling flexibility |
| Cheaper HDMI cable or adapter | Usually simpler, but model-specific power and compatibility are not established here | Resolution handling and picture quality vary by product | XBHD dual-output, optical-audio and three-port LAN features are not established for generic cables | Budget buyers who only need basic display connectivity |
Reviews place the XBHD below a good internal HDMI modification or quality upscaler for ultimate sharpness. Its counterargument is the lack of soldering, firmware work or a separate scaler, plus the unusual dual-output and LAN hardware.

Price and value
EON’s official page lists the XBHD at $149.99 on a page accessed in 2026. Time Extension reviewed a $189.99 price in 2023, while A&C Games listed $249.99 CAD on a page crawled in 2026. These figures are from different dates and regions, so your delivered price, taxes, shipping and stock status may differ.
EON names Amazon, CastleMania Games, GamesConnection, StoneAgeGamer, ZedLabz, Retro Island Gaming and Bitjump Games as availability channels. Check the retailer’s current listing before purchase rather than relying on an older review price.
When the price makes sense
- Choose it when avoiding an internal mod is important.
- Its value is stronger if you will use both HD outputs, optical audio or the three-port LAN expansion.
- Consider an upscaler or internal HDMI mod instead if maximum image sharpness is worth additional hardware, installation or cost.
- A basic HDMI cable may cost less, but the supplied evidence does not establish equivalent video quality or the XBHD’s extra connectivity.
Pros and limitations
Advantages
- No console modification and no external power supply.
- Supports original Xbox NTSC and PAL hardware.
- Two HD outputs simplify simultaneous display and capture.
- Three Ethernet ports can support a four-system wired LAN arrangement without a separate router.
- Optical-audio connectivity is built in.
Limitations
- It stops at 1080i and cannot turn lower-resolution Xbox games into native 4K video.
- Independent reviews found softer output than stronger upscalers or internal HDMI modifications.
- Dark scenes may lose detail or appear too dark, depending on the game and display chain.
- Retail pricing varies substantially by region and date.
Verdict: who should buy the EON XBHD?
The EON XBHD is a convenience-focused accessory for original Xbox owners who want a clean HDMI connection without opening the console. Its dual outputs, optical audio and three-port LAN expansion give it capabilities that ordinary display adapters may not provide. Buy it with realistic expectations: it delivers supported HD modes up to 1080i, not modern 4K-quality rendering, and reviews identify softness and dark-game detail loss. If your first priority is installation-free setup and flexible connectivity, it is a strong fit; if absolute image quality comes first, compare its current price with an internal HDMI modification or a quality upscaler.
