A June 2021 video report showed a helmeted man piloting a large, multi-rotor aircraft at low altitude through New York’s Times Square. The pilot was unidentified in the first report, but a July 2021 Futurism interview identified him as Hunter Kowald, who said the aircraft was his own design, the SkySurfer.
What the Times Square video shows
Victor Tangermann’s Futurism report, updated June 22, 2021, described a person riding a large aircraft with what appeared to be eight rotors. The craft seemed to travel roughly 10 feet above the ground. Those details were visual observations in the report, not independently measured specifications.
The footage was framed as a man flying through Times Square on a giant drone, although “drone” is a shorthand description rather than a confirmed legal or technical classification.
Who was the man flying in Times Square?
The original report said the pilot’s identity was unclear. It mentioned Hunter Kowald as a possibility because he had appeared in an earlier, similar video.

That uncertainty was resolved in Dan Robitzski’s Futurism interview, published July 6, 2021: Kowald identified himself as the pilot and described the aircraft as his own design, called the SkySurfer.
What is the SkySurfer?
Kowald presented the SkySurfer as a personal, multi-rotor aircraft that he designed and built. In the interview, he described custom components, redundant systems and structural testing, while also recounting failures during development. These are the creator’s statements, not an independent engineering or safety certification.

Kowald said he considered the vehicle an ultralight aircraft and was in contact with the Federal Aviation Administration. He described a production process involving permits, airspace checks, contacting control towers in some situations, coordination with the city, closed-course setups and safety personnel.
Those comments describe his general planning approach. They do not prove that the specific Times Square flight had a permit, nor do they establish the aircraft’s current legal classification or the requirements that would apply today.

Did the Times Square flight have permission?
The June 2021 report explicitly said it was unknown whether the flight had permission from local law enforcement. Kowald’s later, general discussion of permits and production coordination does not answer that specific question.
Nothing in these reports independently verifies a permit, an approved flight plan or compliance with current New York City and aviation rules. A video alone cannot establish that a flight was authorized.
