MSI Project Zero “Hidden-Cable” Motherboards: What Intel and AMD Builders Need to Know

MSI Project Zero rear-connect motherboards hide cabling behind the tray. Here are the reported AMD and Intel models, plus the case-clearance checks builders must make.

MSI’s “hidden-cable” motherboard concept is Project Zero: many power, fan, USB and front-panel connectors are moved to the back of the PCB so cables route behind the motherboard tray. It does not make cables disappear, and it only works when the PC case has matching rear openings and enough clearance.

Reported examples cover AMD’s B650M Project Zero for AM5, Intel’s B760M Project Zero for LGA1700, and Intel Z890 Tomahawk WiFi PZ boards for Core Ultra 200 (Arrow Lake). Those examples do not establish a complete, current Project Zero range for every next-generation Intel and AMD platform, so buyers should verify each exact SKU with MSI and the case manufacturer.

What “hidden-cable” means on an MSI motherboard

Project Zero is a back-connect design. Instead of placing most headers along the visible front and right edges, MSI relocates them to the motherboard’s rear side. A compatible chassis then provides cutouts in the motherboard tray so cables can be plugged in from behind.

  • Cables are concealed from the visible side of the build, not eliminated.
  • The benefit is primarily a cleaner presentation and easier front-side cable routing.
  • There is no established performance, airflow or cable-reduction statistic for Project Zero in the available reporting.

Which MSI Project Zero boards have been reported?

Reported board Platform Evidence and qualification
B650M Project Zero AMD AM5 Identified by Custom PC on November 6, 2023; verify the exact CPU-support list and retail SKU with MSI.
B760M Project Zero Intel LGA1700 Identified by Custom PC on November 6, 2023; intended for the LGA1700 platform, with exact processor support dependent on the board’s BIOS and specifications.
MAG Z890 Tomahawk WiFi PZ and a white variant Intel Core Ultra 200, Arrow Lake Tom’s Hardware reported three Project Zero boards at CES on January 8, 2025, including these Z890 models; the report describes their onboard plugs as rear-mounted.

This is a set of documented examples, not proof that MSI offers equivalent hidden-connector boards for every current Intel or AMD generation. Product names, regional stock and support lists can change.

Why the case matters more than the motherboard name

A conventional case may have no way to reach rear-facing headers. Before ordering, confirm that the motherboard and chassis are designed to work together.

Check the CPU platform and socket

Match the board to the processor family first: B650M Project Zero is an AM5 example, B760M Project Zero is an LGA1700 example, and Z890 Tomahawk WiFi PZ models were reported for Intel Core Ultra 200. Do not infer compatibility from the “Project Zero” label alone.

Check form factor and tray cutouts

Confirm whether the board is micro-ATX, ATX or another size, then inspect the case’s motherboard tray. Rear cutouts must line up with the board’s actual connector positions; generic cable-routing holes are not necessarily sufficient.

Check depth and cable clearance

Rear connectors need room for plugs, bends and strain relief behind the tray. A case can have openings yet still be too shallow for thick 24-pin, USB or fan cables. Chassis cutouts and clearance were highlighted as key considerations in an August 2026 iTechGuides discussion.

Map every connection in your build

  • 24-pin motherboard and CPU power leads
  • Graphics-card and storage power cables
  • Front-panel, USB and audio headers
  • Fan, pump and RGB connections
  • SATA data or other expansion connections required by your components

Use MSI’s board manual to identify which of these are rear-mounted, then compare that layout with the case manual. A matching motherboard-and-case combination is the reliable physical path; there is no universal case-compatibility list established here.

What to expect when building with Project Zero

  1. Confirm the exact motherboard model, socket, chipset and BIOS requirements for your CPU.
  2. Confirm the case explicitly supports that model or its back-connect layout.
  3. Install and route rear cables while the tray area is accessible; leave slack for service and replacement.
  4. Check that the side panel closes without pressing hard against connectors.
  5. Before final cable management, power on and test front-panel, USB, storage, fan, pump and lighting connections.

The visible side can look substantially cleaner, but assembly is less forgiving if a connector is inaccessible after the board and cooler are installed. Plan cable paths before closing the rear panel.

Do not confuse Project Zero with MSI Streamline

MSI’s Streamline name also appears on the MPG CORELIQUID P13 all-in-one cooler. In an official August 1, 2025 announcement, MSI said: “All cables and tubing are seamlessly hidden using MSI’s Streamline design, delivering an ultra-clean look.” That statement describes the cooler’s cable-and-tubing concealment, not Project Zero motherboard connector placement.

Is MSI making hidden-cable boards for all next-generation Intel and AMD systems?

Not on the evidence available for this topic. The reported B650M, B760M and Z890 examples show that MSI has applied the rear-connector approach across selected AMD and Intel products. They do not verify a complete next-generation lineup or a newly announced, universal motherboard family. Treat any listing that implies every new Intel and AMD platform has a Project Zero option as unconfirmed until MSI publishes the exact model and support documentation.

Buying checklist

  • Write down the exact motherboard and case model numbers.
  • Verify CPU socket, chipset, memory type and BIOS support.
  • Look for explicit back-connect or Project Zero support in the case documentation.
  • Compare rear cutout positions and available tray depth.
  • Confirm that your power, USB, fan, RGB and storage cables can reach without sharp bends.
  • Check current regional availability and returns policy because inventory and specifications can change.

The Bottom Line

MSI Project Zero makes a cleaner-looking build by relocating motherboard connectors behind the PCB, but it is a motherboard-and-case system rather than a cable-free design. The B650M, B760M and Z890 Tomahawk WiFi PZ reports are useful starting points; verify the exact board, CPU support and chassis clearance before buying.
