Verdict: The Dyson Supersonic r is an excellent ergonomic and precision-styling dryer, but it is not a universal speed upgrade. At the U.S. list price of $549.99, it makes the most sense for frequent stylers, professionals, and anyone whose wrist or shoulder tires during long sessions. Choose the Supersonic Nural for automated scalp protection, or the original Supersonic and Shark SpeedStyle line for better value.
Dyson’s U.S. consumer listing showed the Supersonic r in stock at $549.99 on August 18, 2026. Prices, colors and retailer inventory can change.

What is the Dyson Supersonic r?
The Supersonic r is Dyson’s compact, curved hair dryer designed to put the airflow outlet closer to the hand and improve visibility of the brush and hair section. Dyson introduced the professional version for salons in February 2024 and followed with a consumer version in 2025. The two share the curved body and intelligent-attachment concept, but they are not identical: the professional model has a salon-oriented 12.5-foot cable and a filter system intended for heavier use, while the consumer model has a 6.1-foot cable.
Dyson calls the consumer r its lightest and most powerful dryer, citing a Hyperdymium motor rated up to 110,000 rpm. Those are manufacturer descriptions; motor speed is not the same thing as measured airflow or a guaranteed drying time.
#1 Best Overall
- PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE: Style with high-velocity airflow for wet-to-dry, ultra-fast styling with no heat damage. Elevate your styling game by achieving flawless, high-shine straight hair with volume right at home.
- HIGH-VELOCITY AIRFLOW: Style at home with the professional performance that the salon stylists use. Achieve all your favorite looks quickly with airflow speeds reaching 0-100 mph in less than a second, all while protecting your hair health.
- SCALP SHIELD MODE: Activate to instantly reduce air temperatures to the optimum safe level for scalp comfort and root drying. Designed to protect new hair growth from extreme heat. Developed with dermatologists. Approved by stylists.
- NO HEAT DAMAGE: SpeedStyle Pro measures and regulates temperature 1,000 times a second, never exceeding 230°F, and never approaching heat damaging temperature of 302°F.
- TURBO CONCENTRATOR: Designed to give you sleek, straight styles with no heat damage. It features a 360° rotatable nozzle - adjust it to your desired angle for easy, controlled styling. Perfect for every hair type.

Photos: what to show from every angle
A useful photo set should demonstrate how the r is held, not just show its unusual silhouette. The most revealing views are:
- Hero view: the dryer beside all five attachments.
- Side profile: the curved “r” shape and compact outlet.
- Controls: power, heat and airflow switches on the rear of the handle.
- In-hand view: grip orientation and how close the outlet sits to the hand.
- Attachment close-ups: each tool mounted and removed.
- Cable and filter: the consumer cable connection and filter area.
- Curly/coily setup: diffuser and wide-tooth comb together.
- Straight/wavy setup: concentrator and flyaway attachment.
Captions should identify what each image demonstrates—for example, that the outlet stays close to the hand during brush work—rather than claiming a measured performance result. A before-and-after image is meaningful only when hair type, products, settings, time and permission are documented.
Specifications and what you get
| Specification | Consumer Supersonic r |
|---|---|
| Observed U.S. price (August 18, 2026) | $549.99 |
| Voltage and power | 120 V; 1,700 W |
| Motor claim | Hyperdymium, up to 110,000 rpm |
| Official sound level | 80.1 dBA |
| Airflow | 12.5 l/s |
| Weight specification | 0.7 lb for the body; complete operating weight varies with cable and attachment |
| Cable | 6.1 ft |
| Heat settings | Four, including cold shot |
| Warranty | Two-year limited warranty |
Dyson says the r is 30% smaller and 20% lighter than the previous Supersonic, but the company’s comparison basis should not be read as the weight of every complete setup. A body-only specification, a cable-and-plug weight and perceived weight during styling are different things.
The consumer package is documented with five intelligent attachments: powerful air, professional concentrator, diffuser, flyaway and wide-tooth comb. Bundles can differ by country, retailer, color and edition, so check the exact listing before buying. RFID chips let the dryer recognize an attachment, recommend a temperature and airflow range, and remember the last-used settings for that attachment. You can still override those recommendations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow each attachment performs
| Attachment | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Powerful air | Rough-drying and removing moisture quickly | High airflow can disturb curls or a carefully shaped section |
| Professional concentrator | Focused airflow for brush work, smoothing and directional styling | Requires sectioning and brush technique; it is not a shortcut to a finished style |
| Diffuser | Distributing air over waves, curls and coils | Results depend on bowl size, airflow setting, heat and whether you want definition or stretch |
| Wide-tooth comb | Detangling and stretching curly or coily hair while drying | Can elongate rather than preserve maximum shrinkage and may snag if hair is not prepared |
| Flyaway | Smoothing the surface of dry, straight or straightened hair using the Coanda effect | Dyson’s manual limits it to dry, straight or straightened hair; it is not a wet-hair curl attachment |
The flyaway limitation is especially important: use the concentrator, diffuser or comb for wet hair instead of treating the flyaway tool as a general-purpose nozzle. See Dyson’s attachment-use manual.
Design and ergonomics
The r’s strongest advantage is handling. Its short, curved body can make the brush and section easier to see, and it avoids holding a long motor housing away from the head. That can matter more than a headline airflow figure when a styling session lasts many minutes or a stylist repeats the motion all day.
There is an adjustment period. The rear-mounted controls are small and can be fiddly; TechRadar found them easy to press accidentally or awkward to reach without changing grip. The balance will not feel natural to every user, and round-brush work still takes practice. A lighter body does not automatically mean less effort if your wrist angle becomes strained.
Rank #2
- High-Speed Styling, No Compromise: This powerful hair dryer delivers ultra-fast wet-to-dry results with three smart styling attachments tailored to your hair type—ideal for women seeking quick, professional blowouts at home.
- Shiny, Frizz-Free Finish: The RapidGloss Finisher uses dual high-speed airflow to smooth flyaways and boost shine, giving you salon-quality results without the frizz—perfect for straight and wavy hair.
- No Heat Damage: Advanced technology regulates temperature 1,000x per second, staying below 230°F to protect hair from heat damage while still delivering fast, effective styling.
- Smart Styling Technology: Automatically adjusts heat and airflow based on the attached styler. Features 4 heat settings, 3 airflow speeds, and a cool shot—ideal for creating sleek styles with a round brush.
- LIGHTEST LEADING DIGITAL HAIR DRYER: At just 1.69 lbs., SpeedStyle brings you speed and power in a compact and dynamic styling system that is incredibly easy to use. No more sore arms after styling sessions.
The professional edition is physically related but intended for salon conditions. Dyson lists a 12.5-foot cable, a more durable filter design and a two-year warranty. One Dyson professional listing showed it out of stock during the research period, so availability must be checked immediately before purchase. The long cable is useful around a styling chair but can be cumbersome in a bathroom. Most home users should choose the consumer model.

Speed depends on the hair and the routine
There is no universal “five-minute” result. Length, density, porosity, texture, starting wetness, products, attachment and settings all change the outcome. WIRED reported about 10 minutes on fine, 1B-type hair, similar to the original Supersonic. The Independent reported styling its reviewer’s hair in under five minutes under its own conditions. Those tests are not directly comparable and should not be treated as a promise for thick, long or coily hair.
The useful distinction is drying speed versus styling speed. The r may make controlled brush work easier without dramatically shortening basic rough-drying time. If you test dryers yourself, begin with consistently towel-dried hair, record texture and density, use the same products, attachment and settings, repeat each run at least twice, and report rough-dry and styled times separately.
Noise
The r is not silent. Tom’s Guide measured it in the mid-70-decibel range on high heat and speed, while Dyson lists 80.1 dBA. Distance, room acoustics, equipment and operating mode can explain the gap. Some reviewers found it less intrusive than conventional high-power dryers, but published numbers are test-specific.
Heat and hair-health claims
Dyson says its heater and airflow design distribute heat evenly, reduce static and deliver up to 46% less frizz, and markets the dryer with “no heat damage” language. These are manufacturer claims, not proof that hair is damage-proof. Heat regulation, long-term fiber damage and the appearance of shine or frizz are different outcomes. WIRED also reported occasions when the dryer felt hot enough that manual setting changes were needed, so do not rely blindly on presets.
Curly and coily hair: who should use which tool?
The diffuser and wide-tooth comb make the r relevant to textured hair, but neither tool guarantees a particular finish. A diffuser on low airflow may preserve a cast and definition; stronger airflow can speed drying while disrupting curl groups. The comb can detangle and stretch dense hair, which is useful for elongation but less suitable when maximum shrinkage and definition are the goal. Consider bowl coverage, snagging, scalp heat and your preferred finish before paying for the dryer.

| Factor | Supersonic r | Supersonic Nural |
|---|---|---|
| Main strength | Low weight, compact ergonomics and precision styling | Automated scalp protection and convenience |
| Intelligent attachments | Yes, with attachment memory | Yes, with attachment memory |
| Scalp automation | Not its defining feature | Scalp Protect adjusts heat as the dryer approaches the scalp |
| Pause behavior | Not a central advertised feature | Pause Detect reduces heat, airflow and noise when placed down |
| Best match | Stylists and users prioritizing maneuverability | Users prioritizing automated heat management |
Choose the Nural when reducing decision-making and monitoring scalp distance matters more than the r’s compact balance. Independent coverage has generally placed the Nural below the r, but current prices should be checked separately.

- Dyson Supersonic hair dryer designed for travel. 32% smaller and 25% lighter than Dyson Supersonic Nural. Still mighty.
- Travel ready with universal voltage that adapts automatically, for uncompromised performance when traveling abroad.
- Lightweight and compact, for easy portability.
- Healthier hair compared to drying and styling with a hotel hair dryer.³
- Intelligent heat control and powerful Air Multiplier technology deliver fast, efficient styling, even on the move.
Supersonic r versus the original Supersonic
The original remains the sensible choice for rough-drying, familiar controls and discounted or refurbished buying. Published testing found that the r can take a similar amount of time on some hair types, so the upgrade is mainly about ergonomics, visibility and the newer attachment system—not guaranteed dramatic speed.
Upgrade only when the original’s weight or balance causes real fatigue, you do prolonged precision styling, or the r’s attachment set solves a routine problem. If your current Supersonic works well and you do not need those changes, keep it.
Price, alternatives and ownership details
At $549.99, the r is a premium purchase. Retailer promotions, Dyson Renewed inventory, seasonal discounts and stylist pricing can change the calculation; verify price, stock, color, returns and warranty on the day you buy. Dyson’s professional page mentions an exclusive $100 discount for qualified stylists and salon owners after license verification.
Shark’s SpeedStyle and SpeedStyle Pro Flex lines are the principal lower-cost alternatives. WIRED has listed the SpeedStyle Pro Flex at approximately $250, although current pricing must be checked. Shark emphasizes drying and multi-styling value; it does not reproduce Dyson’s curved ergonomics or RFID attachment system.
Clean the filter according to the manual. On the professional model, a flashing yellow LED near the filter signals that cleaning is needed. Neglecting maintenance can reduce airflow and shorten useful life.
Who should buy the Supersonic r?
- Buy it if you style frequently, hold a dryer for long periods, experience wrist or shoulder fatigue, or value precise brush work and five included attachments.
- Choose the Nural if Scalp Protect and Pause Detect are more useful than minimum weight.
- Choose the original Supersonic or a Shark if fast, straightforward drying at a lower cost is the priority.
- Skip the upgrade if your existing Supersonic is comfortable and functional.
- Consider another category if you want one tool that also creates curls or waves; a FlexStyle- or Airwrap-style multi-styler may fit better.
The Supersonic r earns its premium mainly through handling, precision and attachment versatility. It is a compelling ergonomic upgrade, not a universal speed upgrade.
