Samsung Virtual Gamepad Review: A Clever Free Controller That Still Needs Fixes

Samsung Virtual Gamepad is a convenient free way to test Gaming Hub, but touchscreen controls, compatibility limits and missing customization keep it from replacing a physical gamepad.

Verdict: Samsung Virtual Gamepad is worth trying if you already have a compatible Android phone and Samsung TV or monitor. It removes the cost of buying a controller before testing Gaming Hub, but touchscreen controls remain a poor substitute for a physical gamepad in long, precise or competitive sessions.

What Samsung Virtual Gamepad does

Samsung Virtual Gamepad is a free Android app from Samsung Electronics that turns a compatible phone into a touchscreen controller for supported Samsung Smart TVs and monitors. It is primarily designed for cloud games in Samsung Gaming Hub, although Samsung also describes support for selected TV gaming experiences. The app controls the game on the Samsung display; it is not a way to play those TV games directly on the phone.

It is also not a universal Bluetooth gamepad or remote. Installing it on an Android device does not make it work with a non-Samsung television, and a Galaxy tablet does not automatically become a supported Gaming Hub receiver.

Samsung presents the app as a way to try cloud gaming without first purchasing a physical controller. Its official listing is available on Google Play.

GameSir X5 Lite Mobile Gaming Controller for Android,Hall Effect Joystick
  • WIDE SCREEN COMPATIBILITY — PHONE TO TABLET: X5 Lite is a versatile phone controller that stretches up to 213mm to fit iPhone 15/16, most Android phones, iPad mini 6/7, and compatible Android tablets. Secure Type-C connection keeps gameplay stable and responsive.
  • MOBILE, CLOUD & REMOTE GAMING: Play supported mobile games like Zenless Zone Zero, or stream console and PC games through Xbox Game Pass, Steam Link, Moonlight, and remote play. Enjoy physical controls wherever you play.
  • HALL EFFECT STICKS — PRECISE CONTROL: GameSir Hall Effect sensing sticks deliver smooth 360° control for accurate aiming, movement, and camera adjustments. Built for fast-paced mobile games and streamed console or PC titles.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & ERGONOMIC — 135.4G: At just 135.4g, X5 Lite stays lightweight during extended gaming. Ergonomic, laser-engraved textured grips provide a secure, comfortable hold at home or on the go.
  • CUSHIONED MEMBRANE CONTROLS — COMFORTABLE & QUIETER: Cushioned membrane buttons and triggers provide comfortable feedback for repeated inputs while keeping operation quieter. Ideal for extended sessions or gaming in shared spaces.

Compatibility checklist

  • Phone: Android 9 or later, according to the Google Play listing.
  • Display: Generally a Samsung Smart TV or monitor from 2022 onward.
  • Service: Gaming Hub must be available for the account and country.
  • Game: The individual cloud title must support the virtual controller.
  • Availability: Samsung warns that supported devices, countries and games can differ.

A supported model year does not guarantee that every Gaming Hub title or feature will work. Check Samsung’s current listing and your TV’s Gaming Hub page before relying on the app.

How to connect Virtual Gamepad

  1. Open Gaming Hub on the compatible Samsung TV or monitor.
  2. Launch a supported cloud game or open its controller-pairing prompt.
  3. Scan the QR code shown on the display with the Android phone.
  4. Install or open Samsung Virtual Gamepad and follow the pairing instructions.
  5. Keep the phone’s on-screen controls available while the game runs on the TV.

Samsung also describes access through the SmartThings mobile app and its TV plug-in. Earlier coverage found the option under the selected TV’s Camera Sharing area, but SmartThings labels and locations can change by app version, TV software and country. The QR-code route from Gaming Hub is the least ambiguous starting point.

If pairing fails

  • Make sure the phone and TV are on the same local network when the pairing flow requires it.
  • Restart Gaming Hub, SmartThings and Virtual Gamepad.
  • Remove and re-add the TV in SmartThings.
  • Update the TV software, SmartThings and the gamepad app.
  • Start pairing from the QR code in Gaming Hub instead of opening the controller app by itself.
  • Confirm that the game supports the virtual controller.
  • Recheck the TV model year and whether Gaming Hub is offered in your country.

These are practical recovery steps, not a complete Samsung-certified troubleshooting procedure. A phone can install the app successfully even when no compatible display or game is available.

What works well

It removes the first purchase

The app’s strongest feature is economic rather than technical: you can test Gaming Hub without buying a controller first. That is useful for people who already own an Android phone, families deciding whether cloud gaming is worthwhile and casual players who only need occasional access.

The rechargeable wireless PC controller features a powerful 600mAh rechargeable battery, delivering up to 18 hours of continuous gameplay on a single charge. This ensures that you can enjoy uninterrupted gaming sessions with your controller for PC

It is convenient for short sessions

Your phone is already familiar, requires no separate accessory to charge and can be paired quickly. Simple or slower-paced games can be comfortable enough for a brief session or as an emergency second controller.

It makes Gaming Hub easier to try

Samsung’s broader goal is to lower the barrier to its cloud-gaming platform. The app succeeds at that limited job even if it does not deliver the feel of a dedicated gamepad, as discussed in SamMobile’s overview.

What still needs to be better

1. Custom layouts should persist

The original SamMobile review reported that the controls could be rearranged but that a preferred layout could not be saved. If the arrangement disappears after reopening the app, customization becomes a chore rather than a useful feature.

Samsung should support multiple named profiles, automatic loading of the last-used arrangement and export or Samsung-account synchronization for layouts.

  • Compatible with Windows and Android.
  • 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
  • Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
  • Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
  • Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.

2. A visible reset button is essential

The same review said that closing and reopening the app was the practical way to return to the default arrangement. A customizable interface needs a clear Reset layout command, with separate options to reset the current profile or all profiles and a confirmation before anything is erased.

3. Controls need stronger visual separation

Gray controls that blend into the phone screen are difficult to locate while attention is on the TV. A touchscreen has no physical landmarks, so visibility matters more than it would on a conventional controller.

  • High-contrast and dark themes
  • Adjustable opacity and larger labels
  • Clear separation between sticks, triggers, face buttons and the D-pad
  • Optional color coding that does not rely on color alone
  • Audio or haptic feedback settings
  • Sizing and contrast options for low-vision users

Better color can make buttons easier to find, but it cannot recreate the tactile feedback of physical controls.

4. Vibration needs a switch

Google Play reviews include repeated complaints about unwanted or constant vibration and requests for a way to disable it. These are user reports rather than an independently measured failure rate, but they identify a straightforward improvement. Samsung should provide an on/off toggle, intensity levels and, ideally, per-game settings. The app should also explain whether vibration originates in the phone, app or TV connection.

  • BUILT-IN AUDIO SUPPORT — Plug in compatible headsets using the 3.5mm audio jack for direct voice chat and immersive in-game sound.

Store feedback is available on the Google Play listing.

5. Shoulder buttons are not obvious enough

One later reviewer said the L1/L2/R1/R2 controls were initially hard to understand and that the control circle could be dragged to the required button. That report suggests a discoverability problem, not proof that the same gesture works identically in every version or game.

A first-run overlay should label every control, demonstrate the shoulder buttons and offer an interactive tutorial. Trigger controls should remain visible instead of depending on an unexplained gesture, with an accessibility option to enlarge them.

6. Phone ergonomics remain the core limitation

Even a well-designed layout cannot supply the grip, physical landmarks and precise analog resistance of a controller. Holding a phone for a long session can also expose battery drain, hand fatigue and interruptions from calls or messages.

Can it replace a physical controller?

Use case Practical verdict
Testing Gaming Hub before spending money Yes; this is the app’s best use.
Occasional casual gaming Often adequate, depending on the game.
Long sessions Usually inferior because of comfort and tactile feedback.
Action, racing or shooter games Physical controls are generally the safer choice for precision.
Competitive play Use a physical controller.
Temporary second controller Potentially useful, provided the title supports it.
Accessibility Helpful for some users; difficult for people who depend on touch landmarks.

In short, Virtual Gamepad can replace a controller for the purpose of trying a game. It is unlikely to replace one as a primary input device for demanding play.

Who should use it?

Good candidates

  • First-time cloud gamers testing Samsung Gaming Hub
  • Casual players with short sessions
  • Families checking whether they need an accessory
  • Anyone needing a temporary or emergency controller

Look for a physical controller instead if you need

  • Competitive or precision gaming
  • Long sessions with a comfortable grip
  • Fast repeated trigger and analog-stick input
  • Reliable tactile landmarks
  • A phone that remains free for calls, navigation or another player

What Samsung should prioritize

  1. Saved layouts: Multiple game or genre profiles with automatic recall.
  2. Reset controls: One-tap reset for a profile and a separate reset-all command.
  3. Vibration settings: A master switch, intensity control and per-game behavior.
  4. Visibility options: Contrast, color, opacity, size and accessibility themes.
  5. Shoulder-button guidance: A labeled tutorial and permanently discoverable triggers.
  6. Broader device support: Consider Galaxy tablets, PCs or other Samsung screens, while clearly separating that opportunity from the app’s current TV-and-monitor purpose.

Is Samsung still maintaining it?

The public evidence is inconclusive. Google Play shows a listed update date of February 28, 2024, while APKMirror’s version history shows a package upload dated February 3, 2025. A later package record does not prove meaningful user-facing changes.

The listing displays more than 1 million downloads and approximately a 3.3-star rating, figures that can change. Reviews from 2025 and 2026 continue to request improvements such as vibration control. No available source confirms that Samsung implemented saved layouts, a reset command or color themes, so the fairest conclusion is that the public listing does not clearly document those fixes—not that Samsung has abandoned the app.

Bottom line

Samsung Virtual Gamepad is a useful on-ramp to Gaming Hub: it is free to download and removes the need to buy a controller before trying cloud games. Its limits are equally clear. Compatibility depends on a supported Samsung display, Android phone, region and game; touchscreen controls lack physical feedback; and longstanding usability requests around saved layouts, reset, visibility, vibration and tutorials remain unresolved in the available evidence.
